Bioinformatics Engineer
We are seeking a talented Bioinformatics Engineer with strong programming skills to tackle challenging bioinformatics and computational biology problems. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with scientists and engineers to improve existing and building new pipelines and develop visualization tools to support the exciting opportunities in precision medicine, comparative genomics, molecular evolution, and AI. The candidate must have some experience in bioinformatics and deploying solutions on the cloud. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in nextflow and cloud deployment experience.
This position is based out of Dallas, TX but could also be remote from within the United States. Relocation assistance is available to Dallas if desired. For remote employees, travel to Dallas up to once per quarter is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implements bioinformatics workflows
- Develop new bioinformatics methods and tools
- Optimize bioinformatics workflows to run in a cloud environment
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Candidate must have experience in bioinformatics
- Experience setting up and configuring bioinformatics servers ie UCSC, CellXGene, Shiny, etc
- Ability to implement, debug, and maintain computational tools in common programming languages (Python, R, C++, and/or Java)
- Experience with bioinformatics data (e.g., DNA-seq, RNA-seq, scRNA-seq) and using common bioinformatics tools (e.g., BWA, BEDtools, GATK, IGV)
- Great communication skills, including research report writing, code documentation, and oral presentation, with excellent attention to detail
- Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including knowledge of data structures, the ability to design efficient algorithms, and skill in writing correct, readable code.
- Proficiency with handling large-scale genomic data in a Linux and/or cloud environment (e.g., Google Cloud)
- Experience with version control software (e.g., Git)
- Ability to work independently and successfully in a matrix environment, prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, integrate cross-functional issues and balance competing priorities effectively
- Design, develop, and implement cloud-based applications and services in AWS and Azure
- Modernize applications to leverage cloud-native capabilities and improve performance and scalability
- Optimize cloud infrastructure for cost, performance, and security
- Manage and deploy virtual machines, serverless computing resources, and virtual networks
Education and Experience:
- Masters with 2 years or bachelor’s with 5+ years of bioinformatics research experience in quantitative or basic science (computational biology, bioinformatics, computational chemistry)
- Experience with version control software (e.g., Git)
- Experience with workflow management software such as SnakeMate and Nextflow
- Experience with cloud computing including AWS and Google Cloud
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
- Experience writing automated functional and unit test scripts
- Experience with team-based coding, repository, and branch management
- Experience writing automated functional and unit test scripts
