Salas O'Brien is a nationally recognized employee-owned engineering and consulting firm dedicated to creating innovative, sustainable, and high-performing environments. We are seeking an AV Consultant to join our Technology team.
The AV Consultant will work with senior consultants, project managers, clients, and integrators to develop audiovisual systems for legislative spaces, conference centers, auditoriums, multipurpose event spaces, meeting rooms, and other venues.
This position participates throughout the project lifecycle, from needs assessment and evaluation of existing systems through design, construction coordination, and commissioning. The ideal candidate can independently develop defined portions of a project, produce coordinated technical documentation, and identify issues that require additional information or senior guidance.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about AV and technology, combines practical AV knowledge, attention to detail, and clear communication with a commitment to understanding and addressing client needs.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with clients and project teams to identify requirements and translate them into practical, reliable audiovisual system designs.
- Develop audio, video, control, and AV networking designs under the direction and in coordination with a Senior Engineer.
- Produce and maintain coordinated design documentation, including signal-flow diagrams, floor plans, rack elevations, plate details, equipment schedules, specifications, bills of materials, and cost estimates.
- Research and verify equipment specifications, compatibility, connectivity, mounting requirements, accessories, and product availability.
Evaluate design alternatives with consideration for performance, budget, installation, operation, maintenance, and existing conditions. - Perform site surveys, review existing documentation, and identify discrepancies or information requiring field verification.
- Coordinate rack space, service access, power, heat loads, PoE requirements, cable pathways, and network connectivity with the appropriate project disciplines and client stakeholders.
- Support construction administration through submittal reviews, responses to contractor questions, and preparation of drawing revisions and addenda.
- Support system commissioning, configuration verification, functional testing, and troubleshooting.
- Clearly document design decisions, unresolved questions, and coordination requirements while managing assigned tasks across multiple projects.
Qualifications & Experience
- Typically three to five years of relevant experience in audiovisual consulting, design, integration, commissioning, or field engineering, with demonstrated ability to develop system designs and technical documentation.
- Ability to independently complete defined portions of a project, identify missing information, and seek senior guidance on complex design decisions.
- Working knowledge of audio, video, control, and AV networking systems, including signal flow, equipment interfaces, and infrastructure requirements.
- Understanding of AV-over-IP systems and associated considerations such as bandwidth, PoE, fiber and copper connectivity, and coordination with IT teams.
- Understanding of audio DSP signal flow and control-system architecture sufficient to develop and document system requirements.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD sufficient to produce, revise, and maintain coordinated AV drawing sets.
- Ability to interpret manufacturer documentation and verify that selected equipment and accessories meet the intended application.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical requirements and manage competing priorities.
- AVIXA CTS-D certified. Relevant practical experience or demonstrated ability considered with a commitment to pursue certification within the first two years of employment.
