Job Summary
The Associate Chief Financial Officer ("ACFO"), works under minimal supervision, key senior leadership position in the organization with responsibility for the organization's nearly $1.1 Billion Budget, Financial Planning and Analysis, Ambulatory Care Services (ACS), Cost Accounting, Labor Productivity, Provider Financial Services, and other functions as assigned. Serves as the CFO's designee for several responsibilities. Supports organization wide efforts and participates on project teams organized around Financial Vitality, Customer Service, Quality, Community relationships, Business Development, Workforce Governance and Workforce Engagement. Interact with a wide variety of staff in the organization including direct and indirect reports, peers, Executives and Board committees. Develops and executes improvement plans for all areas of responsibility including continuous analysis of performance metrics.
Essential Functions:
  • Financial Analysis and Operations – Provide oversight in this area. Provide strategic leadership and manage financial performance of ACS. Oversee preparation of Primary Care Grant application and UDS report, present to CHS Board and management. (20%)
  • Budget Operations – Oversee financial planning function and involvement in all aspects of the organization’s ongoing budget process. Incorporate lean management tools, best practices, transparency and creative problem solving techniques. Review budget variances and help operations in course correction initiatives. (20%)
  • Cost Accounting and Organization-Wide Initiatives – Implement process and system improvements in effective cost accounting/decision support functions. Ensure timely, accurate and thorough reporting from financial analysis team and systems. Assist the CFO and serve as a designee on major organization wide initiatives and projects, primarily related to areas under the supervision of the CFO which include Finance, Business Development, External Affiliations, Revenue Cycle and other financial support Services. Oversee the continuum of work from strategic levels to hands-on detail when needed. Prepare and give presentations, represent the organization with the State of Colorado, City and County of Denver and/or federal government and other agencies, as needed. (20%)
  • Labor Productivity Operations – Oversee this function in collaboration with operational leaders; assist in conflict resolution related to management of productivity targets and further best practices in the organization. Incorporate lean management tools, best practices, creative problem solving and robust quality assurance process. (20%)
  • Physician/Provider Financial Services and Other Duties as Assigned – Coordinate the process of data analysis and reporting for physicians and other direct care providers. Activities include incorporating Relative Value Unit (RVU) tracking and reports into financial analysis, physician budgets, support of Chief Medical Officer in physician policy determination, calculation of incentive compensation and other activities. (10%)
  • Talent Management – Enhances employee engagement by providing resources, support and tools to work in the form of extra-time, brainpower and energy. Mentors, guides and coaches direct reports in order to expand their capabilities and build management depth in the organization for succession planning. Staffs, trains, advises, evaluates the performance of, and when necessary, disciplines and/or discharges staff at multiple levels. Delegates responsibility and authority over operational functions to subordinate managers and supervisors. Supervises administrative and support personnel ensuring duties and tasks flow without overlap or unnecessary hand-offs. (10%)

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related area Required

Work Experience:
  • 4-6 years Typically, five years or more of directly related experience, preferably in a similar position or as Controller or Budget Director. Required
  • 4-6 years supervisory experience. Required

Licenses:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Ability to effectively analyze and organize departmental strategic plans and motivate team to execute on the results.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to solve problems creatively and ethically.
    • Technical skills and knowledge in the healthcare industry and in performance improvement tools, for example, ability to develop graphs that are appropriate for Board level review and use of statistical tools such as control charts for analysis.
    • Familiarity with Lean Management Systems
    • Ability to drill down to root cause of problems in an organized manner.
    • Auditing experience is strongly preferred.
    • Ability to develop an effective Quality Assurance process to ensure no errors in financial data.
