Job Summary: The Art Director plays a crucial role in shaping the Mattress Firm brand's visual narrative, working closely with Promo, Media, and In-store teams to turn initial ideas into compelling assets for diverse media. This individual drives major projects, from national campaigns to web promotions, from concept to final design, ensuring alignment with our brand standards across digital and print platforms. The person in this role is not only an expert in producing visually engaging content but also in mentoring junior designers and collaborating with various teams, fostering a culture of excellence that elevates our brand's market presence. NOTE: All applications must include a professional portfolio. This hybrid role will report to the BedQuarters location in Houston, TX once or twice per month and may work remotely the remainder of the month.  

 
Essential Responsibilities 

  • Exhibit strong leadership by actively collaborating with the design team to efficiently complete creative projects and various design tasks. 

  • Engage with the Secondary Brands team to develop original brand/design concepts for new products destined for Mattress Firm stores and online platforms. 

  • Manage the creation of diverse media elements including logos, color palettes, fonts, toolkits, product and lifestyle photo shoots, in-store POP (in-store display), and more. 

  • Conceptualize and implement large-scale Out-of-Home (OOH) takeover strategies, such as billboard campaigns, subway and transit takeovers, vehicle wraps, and digital displays. 

  • Drive high-impact promotional campaigns that achieve millions of impressions across various media outlets nationwide. 

  • Directly coordinate with the Promo, Media, and In-store teams to develop and refine initial concepts, delivering ready-to-use assets for promotional events. 

  • Maintain professional communication with all internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Complete all required training modules and certifications prior to the due date. 

  • Ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed to ensure a safe work environment for all. 

  • Communicate professionally with all internal and external contacts. 

  • Follow all Company policies and execute Company standards on appearance and functionality as well as appropriate brand representation. 

  • Communicate any concerns or issues to leadership to ensure proper efficiency of department and company operations. 

 

Non-Essential Responsibilities 

  • Participate in cross-departmental meetings to offer creative insights beyond the immediate scope of design projects. 

  • Assist in the recruitment and training of new team members by sharing industry knowledge and best practices. 

  • Provide input on internal process improvements to enhance team productivity and workflow efficiency. 

  • Attend industry events and workshops to stay abreast of the latest design trends and technologies, bringing back learnings to the team. 

  • Occasionally contribute to the company's internal branding and employee engagement initiatives through creative input and design support. 

  • Offer creative support for ad-hoc company projects or initiatives that may fall outside the typical realm of marketing design. 

  • Execute Company initiatives and other activities requested by supervisor. 

  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities. 

  • Contribute ideas on ways to optimize or improve the team, the department, and the Company. 

 

Education 

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, related field, and/or equivalent experience preferred 

 

Professional Experience 

  • 5+ years of experience in graphic design, with a significant portion in a senior or lead designer role.  

  • An impressive portfolio that highlights expertise in various design disciplines and successful project outcomes. 

  • Experience in leading design projects, mentoring junior designers, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to achieve strategic objectives. 

 

Skills List 

  • Mastery of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with web design tools (Figma). 

  • Ability to conceptualize and execute visually compelling designs that align with brand objectives and resonate with the target audience. 

  • Skilled in managing design projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery while maintaining high-quality standards. 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts clearly and collaborate effectively with various teams. 

  • Keen eye for detail, ensuring that every design element is on-brand and contributes to the overall message and aesthetic. 

  • Ability to approach challenges creatively and come up with innovative solutions that enhance design projects. 

  • Skills in guiding and mentoring junior designers, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented team environment. 

  • Capacity to adapt to new trends, technologies, and changing project requirements, maintaining a proactive and flexible approach to work. 

 
Competencies & Knowledge 

  • Microsoft Office Products 

  • Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Mac or PC 

  • Brand Strategy Insight: Deep understanding of how design integrates with overall brand strategy, including awareness of the target audience and market positioning. 

  • Marketing Integration: Insight into how visual design interplays with marketing objectives, enhancing campaign effectiveness and customer engagement. 

  • Industry Trends and Standards: Keeping abreast of evolving design trends, consumer preferences, and industry standards to ensure the company's design output is current and competitive. 

  • Project Lifecycle Comprehension: Familiarity with each phase of the project lifecycle, ensuring designs meet the set objectives from the initial concept to the final output. 

  • Media Specifications Knowledge: Acute awareness of the distinct requirements for various media formats, ensuring designs are optimized for their intended platform.

Compensation:

Competitive $70,000 - $78,000 * depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities may be available and awarded at the discretion of the Company.

*Pay amount does not guarantee employment for any particular time.
