Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

As a Propulsion Analysis Intern, you will primarily focus on structural and/or fluid analyses to support efforts to continually improve our engines and respond to quick development programs. You will be exposed to all systems on our engines and the unique challenges each component presents. With guidance from your technical lead and mentor, you will be expected to complete FEA/CFD analyses, assess risks posed by the hardware, and provide proactive feedback to our design team regarding how to improve their components based on the results of your work. We are seeking a detail-oriented individual with strong communication skills, who is excited about solving problems by digging into the fundamental physics involved.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate engine hardware by using hand calculations and FEA/CFD (e.g. structural margins, fatigue, assess pressure drops and mass flow distributions, etc.)
  • Identify potential design improvements and collaborate with other engineering teams to develop our engines while ensuring they meet our system-level requirements
  • Document analysis results in detailed reports
  • Support and develop tools associated with analysis

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline
  • Strong foundational knowledge from classes covering mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD software (Creo and NX are ideal)
  • Strong communication skills required, both written and verbal
  • Ability to be self-directed and balance several tasks at one time

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with FEA and/or CFD (ANSYS Workbench ideal)
  • Classes covering topics such as: additive manufacturing, design and manufacturing, structural mechanics, heat and mass transfer
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, or other software/scripting languages
  • Familiarity with rocket engine components, valves, combustion devices, and turbomachinery.
  • Applied engineering experience (internship, laboratory, personal/team projects are applicable)
