All smart-home and internet-of-things (IoT) devices are computers. That Philips Hue lightbulb has a computer in it. Modern WiFi routers — also computers. That $400 WiFi-connected juicer? You get the idea.

For that reason, these devices need platforms where software developers can create and deploy applications.

Nubix is a Denver- and San Francisco-based startup that built a platform to help developers build apps for IoT and edge devices. On Wednesday, the company announced the closing of its $2.7 million seed funding round, which was led by Tuscan Management. This brings the three-year-old company’s total funding to $4.5 million.

What makes Nubix special is its ability to deploy apps to even the smallest computing devices. Data shows there are hundreds of billions of chip-based IoT devices out there, the majority of which are microcontrollers. These microcontrollers are smaller and simpler than more advanced processors, which allows them to fit in more devices — but they can also be a liability if left unsecured. That’s why Nubix developed a real-time operating system that allows developers to monitor, analyze and update software on the smallest processors.

As more and more devices become internet-enabled via microcontrollers, developer tools like Nubix will become even more useful.

“Businesses worldwide are investing in digital transformation initiatives with IoT-based solutions. Our unique innovation in container and services technology enables unprecedented agility and safety when building, deploying and managing applications at the edge. We’re delivering on digital transformation’s requirements for agile compute at the edge, empowering organizations to analyze data in real-time where the data is actually created,” Nubix CEO and co-founder Rachel Taylor said in a statement.

Nubix says it will use this funding to expand its engineering efforts and build upon its product. In addition to the funding, Nubix also announced that Joshua Silber of Tuscan Management will be joining its board of directors.
