Vice President of Tax JD

The Vice President of Tax will play a key role in helping deliver on that goal by shaping our tax strategy as we continue to expand globally, ensuring compliance and optimizing our tax position. You will play a direct role in how Toast navigates its next stage of growth.
This role will report directly to Toast’s CFO.
About this roll* (Responsibilities)
- Global Tax Strategy & Planning
- Own the comprehensive global tax strategy that supports Toast’s business objectives
- Lead tax due diligence for any new market entries or M&A
- Advise senior leadership on tax implications of new business initiatives and product offerings
- Stay current with emerging tax trends, changes in legislation, and evolving business practices, and advise the leadership team on strategic implications
- Identify and assess potential tax risks and develop strategies to mitigate exposure to tax penalties and disputes
- Compliance & Reporting
- Oversee the accurate and timely preparation and filing of all U.S. federal, state, and international income tax returns
- Manage the company's global tax provision and related financial statement disclosures
- Ensure compliance with all tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements in all jurisdictions where the company operates
- Tax Audits & Controversies
- Manage all domestic and international tax audits and inquiries from government agencies
- Develop and execute strategies for resolving tax disputes and controversies
- Indirect Tax
- Oversee the company's global indirect tax strategy, including managing VAT/GST, sales & use tax, and other transaction-based taxes
- Stay on top of changes in indirect tax legislation and ensure systems and processes are updated for compliance
- Leadership & Management
- Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing global tax team, providing guidance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement
- Manage relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and government tax authorities
- Serve as a key business partner to senior leadership in Finance, Legal, Sales, and other departments.
- Technology & Process Improvement
- Proactively look for opportunities to improve tax processes
- Work with internal technology teams to drive the selection and implementation of tax technology solutions to automate processes, enhance data analytics, and improve efficiency and accuracy
Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Master's in Taxation or Juris Doctor (JD) preferred
- 15+ years of experience in corporate tax, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role within a multi-national company
- Extensive experience with tax implications of a SaaS business model, including revenue recognition and international expansion
- Experience with tax technology and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP)
- Proven expertise in U.S. and international tax compliance and planning, transfer pricing, and ASC 740 reporting
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex tax issues to non-tax audiences
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and operate as a business partner
- Experience working in fast-paced, evolving environments

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions, if eligible), benefits, and equity (if eligible).
