The Vice President of Finance ensures financial integrity and profitability, managing cash flow, overseeing financial systems, and leading budgeting efforts.
The Vice President of Finance is accountable for the company's financial integrity, liquidity, and profitability. This role ensures that financial data is accurate, timely, defensible, and usable for decision-making across operations, ownership, and leadership.
This role owns the financial systems, cadence, and controls required to support profitable growth, protect cash, and reduce the owner's dependence on ad hoc financial intervention.
Core Responsibilities
- Ensuring accuracy and integrity of the general ledger, WIP, AR, AP, payroll, and inventory
- Enforcing financial policies, approval limits, and internal controls
- Ensuring compliance with accounting standards, tax requirements, and regulatory obligations
- Managing cash inflows and outflows to avoid shortages or surprises
- Actively managing AR collections, AP timing, and working capital
- Providing forward-looking cash visibility to ownership
- Accurate job costing and labor burden allocation
- Proper WIP tracking and revenue recognition
- Identification and escalation of margin leakage
- Leading annual budget development
- Producing rolling forecasts and scenario models
- Monitoring budget vs. actual performance monthly
- Monthly Financial Review (MFR) preparation and leadership facilitation
- Early identification of financial risks or deviations
- Reducing reactive financial questions through proactive reporting
- Training, cross-training, and succession coverage for accounting team
- Consistent execution of finance processes
Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years progressive finance or accounting leadership experience
- Construction, plumbing, HVAC, or project-based business experience strongly preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field (required)
- CPA, CMA, or equivalent credential (strongly preferred)
- Job costing and WIP accounting
- Cash flow and working capital management
- Budgeting and financial controls in growth environments
- High attention to detail with executive-level judgment
- Ability to enforce discipline without micromanagement
- Clear financial communication to non-financial leaders
