Job Overview:

Mob Entertainment is seeking a Lead Designer to own the vision, gameplay, and execution of new experiences built in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). This is a contract, remote role for a mid-to-senior level designer who can blend creative leadership with hands-on implementation, bringing compelling game modes, maps, and systems to life inside Fortnite’s evolving ecosystem.

You’ll be the central force behind each UEFN project—from early pitch and layout to live updates and polish, collaborating with a cross-functional team of artists, audio designers, technical contributors, and QA.

The ideal candidate has released Fortnite Creative maps, understands how to engage the Fortnite audience, and can build tight gameplay loops using both Devices and Verse scripting.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the creative direction and gameplay vision for UEFN projects from concept to release.
  • Design, build, and iterate on levels, game loops, and rulesets using UEFN tools, Devices, and Verse scripting.
  • Lead a small cross-discipline pod—coordinating level design, gameplay logic, art, audio, and testing needs.
  • Write clear, actionable design documentation, including gameplay flows, rulesets, and content guidelines.
  • Frequently playtest and iterate based on feedback, player behavior, and internal review.
  • Maintain scope, pacing, and quality goals, ensuring builds are fun, performant, and polished.
  • Stay up to date with Fortnite Creative trends, popular modes, and top creators—applying competitive insight to your own projects.
  • Communicate vision and direction clearly across team members, stakeholders, and external partners (as needed).

Requirements:

  • At least 2 standout Fortnite Creative or UEFN projects shipped, with visible creative ownership.
  • Deep working knowledge of UEFN, Fortnite Devices, and experience with Verse scripting or equivalent logic tools.
  • Strong level design fundamentals, with a feel for space, flow, player behavior, and balance.
  • Experience leading or collaborating within cross-functional teams, ideally including engineering, art, audio, and QA.
  • Ability to work autonomously—prototyping, implementing, and polishing gameplay without heavy support.
  • Clear communication and documentation skills to align teammates and track evolving designs.
  • A passion for player-first experiences and understanding of what keeps Fortnite players engaged, session over session.

Pluses:

  • Experience balancing game economies, progression systems, or meta loops.
  • Familiarity with live game updates, events, or content drops.
  • Background in PvE/PvP design, especially systems that support replayability and session depth.
  • Experience using analytics tools or structured playtests to validate and iterate on design.
  • Active involvement in the Fortnite Creative developer community or published tutorials/content.
  • Competitive Fortnite player or avid fan of creative community maps.
  • Performance Expectations
  • Deliver playable, polished UEFN experiences on schedule that reflect Fortnite’s tone, quality, and player expectations.
  • Ensure internal documentation, layouts, and logic are clean, scalable, and easy to maintain or extend.
  • Act as the creative anchor for your projects, rallying others around a clear, compelling gameplay vision.
  • Iterate quickly and respond to feedback with actionable changes that improve moment-to-moment and long-term play.

Reporting & Oversight:

Reports to: Director of Technology & Design Director

Works closely with: Technical Artists, VFX/Audio, QA, Engineering, and Project Leads

Tools: UEFN, Verse, Fortnite Creative, Jira, Confluence, Slack

If you’re a builder and designer with a passion for Fortnite Creative, and ready to lead the charge on original, high-quality UEFN experiences, we’d love to see your work.
