Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

As a Turbomachinery Design Engineer II, you will be a key member of a small and talented team working toward refining our turbomachinery across multiple engine platforms.  You will own portions of the turbopump design and provide an active voice in engine test and development.  You will report to the Manager of Turbomachinery.

Responsibilities:

  • You will perform clean sheet design of turbopump subcomponents and assemblies to meet all system level requirements.
  • You will collaborate with the manufacturing, analysis, and test teams to deliver turbopump components on time with DFM, integration, and structural margins in mind.
  • You will incorporate design modifications of existing components to increase performance, improve manufacturability, and resolve limitations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 3+ years’ experience in design, development, and testing.
  • 3+ years' experience within hardware-focused organizations.
  • 3+ years’ experience working with CAD software, preferably Siemens NX or PTC Creo.
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, startup environment.
  • Design experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Mechanical Design, Bearing Design, Seal Design, Rotor dynamics; balancing fundamentals, and/or DFM, GD&T and blueprint review
  • Definition of clear communication process between design, manufacturing, and test operations to ensure products meets all specifications.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • 2+ years’ experience in turbomachinery design, development, and testing.
  • Experience with managing and maintaining large CAD assemblies or structures in a fast-paced manufacturing-heavy environment.
  • Experience operating in ISO 9001 or AS9100 certified organizations.
  • Working knowledge of thermodynamics of incompressible flows and cryogenic fluids.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with fundamental manual or CNC machining equipment and processes (milling, turning)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with basic principles of design for additive manufacturing
  • Liquid propellant rocket engine design, test, or analysis
  • Experience with structural and thermal analysis using Ansys FEA software
  • 2+ years of PTC Creo or Siemens NX CAD programs and Windchill PLM software
