GENERAL PURPOSE

The Trade Compliance Specialist ensures that all laws and regulations are adhered to when dealing with cross-border transactions. Works directly with suppliers, brokers and internal process partners to support the international movement of products supporting Herman Miller's business, including export and import activities from various countries around the world.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Support and take direction from the Customs Compliance Manager and the Trade Compliance Program Specialist.

  • Apply knowledge of U.S. and foreign customs regulations/global trade Compliance to promote increased trade compliance within the organization.

  • Conduct import data reviews to include updating and reviewing country of origin data routinely and ensures data integrity through database comparisons across all data sources.

  • Conduct record-keeping audits.

  • Constantly reviews Free Trade Agreement (FTA) processes and procedures to include solicitation and support of the documents required for both existing and new Free Trade Agreement (FTAs) yearly and as needed for audits, and to ensure benefits are claimed correctly.

  • Create and deliver import/export compliance training materials, providing support and guidance to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Determine whether certain products comply with the Buy American Act and the Trade Agreements Act.

  • Evaluate new government requirements to ensure import and export compliance with changes and incorporate same into day to day operations and standard operating procedures.

  • Identify and analyze causes of international and domestic non-compliance issues, and gaps and generate recommendations to management.

  • Assign trade compliance information to products and components moving internationally including but not limited to Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classifications, Partner Government Agency (PGA) requirements, Export Control Classification (ECCN) and country of origin information.

  • Run US Customs ACE reports and distribute internally as requested.

  • Partner with new product development team to support sourcing decisions for compliance with the GSA contract as well as to mitigate US tariffs.

  • Recommend, develop, and maintain corporate policies and procedures, driving company-wide compliance with global trade programs and initiatives.

  • Support internal, external, and required government compliance audits.

  • Team with third party service providers (e.g. customs brokers, freight forwarders) as necessary, to implement and/or maintain trade and logistics processes in support of operations.

  • Use problem-solving skills to find new and creative ways for process improvement and cost reduction.

  • Performs additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, tax, finance, international relations, pre-law, international business, or supply chain.

  • 4 years’ experience in accounting, tax, finance, international relations, pre-law, international business, or supply chain.

  • 2 + years of experience with global trade compliance responsibilities in a complex import/export environment preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • CBL - Customs Broker License, or willingness to obtained.

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with Global, U.S., and Canadian customs procedures, and the US ACE system is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence, solve problems, and work with all departments in the organization.

  • Strong analytical, organization, time management and process management skills for success in a deadline-oriented environment.

  • Demonstrated high level of written, verbal and interpersonal skills to communicate information, ideas, procedures and processes in a logical sequence; at a level appropriate to the audience and resulting in effective working relationships.

  • Exhibits ability to work cooperatively both in a team environment and independently.

  • Must have competencies that include business acumen, organization skills, and ability to be accurate and timely in completing work assignments.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use office automation, communication, software and tools currently used in the MillerKnoll office environment.

A starting compensation range for this role is $74,000.00 - $84,000.00. Relevant salary considerations will include candidate qualifications and experience, other business/organizational needs and market factors . You may also be eligible to receive a geographic premium, annual discretionary incentive and equity awards which are subject to the rules governing these programs.
