What You’ll Work On
The Center of Excellence (COE) Automation and Informatics Lead is a strategic subject matter expert across within Abbott’s Technical Solution Design (TSD) team. This role is responsible for elevating the technical sales excellence nationwide by ensuring front line TSD teams are equipped with advanced product knowledge, standardized processes, and best-in-class positioning strategies that drive business growth and customer success. Acting as the “expert’s expert,” this role delivers comprehensive training programs, conducts annual competency assessments, and provides next-level support on complex designs. The role partners closely with Marketing, Product Management, and R&D to represent the voice of the customer, influence product enhancements, and keep the field current on new releases.
By continuously refining tools, workflows, and methodologies, the COE Lead enables optimal solution design that maximizes operational efficiency and strengthens long-term customer relationships.
Major Accountabilities
Subject Matter Expertise – 20%
• Serve as the organization’s top expert in Abbott’s automation, informatics, and digital health portfolio to support solution design, proposals, and configurations.
• Conduct solution assessments to optimize product configurations and deliverables for regional teams.
• Leverage deep knowledge of DHS products (e.g., Indexor, AMS, Insight, IMS) to craft winning technical strategies and secure the laboratory technical vote.
• Act as the primary resource for complex automation and informatics design inquiries and advanced sales positioning.
• Maintain mastery of GLP Track Designer requirements to build and validate automation designs; ensure simulation data accuracy.
• Deliver advanced customer demonstrations and highly detailed presentations that build confidence in Abbott capabilities.
• Maintain expert knowledge of competitor products and differentiators.
• Lead the annual review, update, and approval of RFP/RFI content in partnership with the Bid team.
Sales Tool Development– 20%
• Own the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of tools that enable Technical Solution Design excellence (ie Total Value of Ownership (TVO), Capacity Analysis, Server Sizing, etc.)
• Ensure tools and resources align with Abbott brand standards and compliance requirements.
• Drive competitive differentiation by creating strategies and tools that position Abbott solutions against competitor offerings.
• Create and maintain standard templates for Statement of Work documents and network diagrams with collaboration from Abbott network, cybersecurity and technical teams.
• Maintain advanced proficiency in Microsoft Suite Excel, Visio, Track Designer, and simulation tools to support solution design and analysis.
• Partner with global TSD teams to ensure consistency and standardization of solution development is maintained.
Cross-Functional Collaboration – 20%
• Serve as the technical expert and liaison between national customers, sales, service, and international TSD experts, Global Service Technical Organization (GSTO), Abbott Automation Systems (AAS), and global marketing. regional sales teams, global service teams and international colleagues.
• Partner with marketing, product management, and R&D to communicate customer feedback, influence product development, and ensure timely dissemination of new product knowledge.
• Support business strategy through competitive analysis and technical positioning initiatives
• Serve as the primary commercial contact for technical sales teams on process development and improvement initiatives by leveraging advanced technical knowledge and experience selling, implementing and optimizing Abbott solutions.
Sales Enablement – 20%
• Develop and implement technical sales strategies that support regional and national account growth, ensuring alignment with enterprise-level objectives and customer needs.
• Drive competitive differentiation by equipping technical sales teams with advanced positioning tactics, product capability insights, and objection-handling strategies to win against key competitors
• Continuously build and evolve the competitive differentiation documentation and reference manuals in collaboration with the Competitive Insights team, as well as leveraging field travel opportunities with local sales teams
• Partner with Regional Manager and Area Director on enterprise and national account solution design for multi-regional customers and reference laboratories, ensuring complex configurations meet operational and business requirements.
• Review and approve all informatics and automation designs and documentation for accuracy and capabilities prior to submission to the global service technical organization (GSTO) and Abbott Automation Systems (AAS) for serviceable approval, signature file layouts and pricing finalization.
• Serve as the primary resource for technical sales enablement, providing expert guidance on product capabilities, limitations, and integration strategies to support closing high-value deals.
• Collaborate with marketing, product management, and R&D to ensure sales teams have timely, accurate information on new releases, enhancements, and strategic messaging for large scale opportunities.
• Ensure instrumentation and automation simulation data is accurate and complete for all designs prior to submission to customers or global teams
Training and Competency Development – 20%
• Create and deliver comprehensive training programs for Technical Solution Design team members, including new hire onboarding and advanced technical curriculum.
• Field travel with team members to provide coaching, guidance and job skill improvement.
• Collaborate with Global Service training organizations and US Sales training to develop curriculums that are constantly updated to meet the latest product capabilities, improvements and sales strategies.
• Develop SOPs, instruction manuals, and training documentation for tools, workflows, and solution design processes.
• Create and conduct competency assessment programs and testing to ensure technical teams maintain knowledge and proficiency that ensure best in class solution design.
• Organize and lead monthly and annual meetings to ensure continuous collaboration between regional teams, best practice, knowledge sharing and continuous development.
• Create training documentation for new hires in Technical Solution Design team, such as SOP’s and instruction manuals on tools, SOW creation, Visio design, quoting, tools (Total Value of Ownership and Capacity analysis), AMS demo, etc.
• Comfortable and confident presenting and leading training sessions for new employees and serve as a mentor for all trainees.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 10+ years across a combination of:
- Technical sales/solution selling of automated diagnostics systems, laboratory automation, and integrated software.
- Selling and/or implementing digital health solutions and software.
- Clinical laboratory science and hands on experience in hospital laboratory operations/workflows.
- Experience with lab instrumentation, automation, and middleware solutions.
- Data analysis for load balancing, capacity, and performance optimization using instrumentation/automation specific data tools.
- Training program development and adult learning implementation
Preferred Qualifications: (any combination of the below)
o Deep expertise in laboratory automation and informatics
o Advanced analytical and problem solving skills; data driven decision making.
o Strong communication, presentation, and cross functional collaboration skills.
o Competitive intelligence acumen and ability to articulate differentiated positioning.
o Deep understanding of process improvement methodologies
Certifications:
• Lean Six Sigma or equivalent preferred

The base pay for this position is
$97,300.00 – $194,700.00In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
