Job summary

Valimail, a DigiCert company, is helping build a more trusted digital world—starting with email. Valimail is a leader in Email Authentication as a Service. Built on open standards such as DMARC, DKIM, and SPF, Valimail pioneered automated email authentication to protect organizations from impersonation and fraud. Together, Valimail and DigiCert deliver scalable, automated trust—helping organizations operate securely today while preparing for what’s next.

If you’re excited about building meaningful security technology, shaping new categories, and working at the intersection of innovation and global impact, Valimail offers the opportunity to do exactly that.

Step into a high-impact leadership role that balances deep technical execution with strategic team development. As a Technical Engineering Manager, you will spend roughly 50% of your time as a key individual contributor within a scrum team, driving high-quality code and architectural excellence. Beyond daily development tasks, you will empower a focused group of direct reports through dedicated mentorship, performance management, and hiring. Partnering closely with R&D leadership, including the Senior Director and Principal Engineer, you will contribute to our long-term technical vision and product roadmap. This is a unique opportunity to maintain your technical edge while fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration that defines the next chapter of our engineering excellence.

The ideal candidate regularly demonstrates our behaviors/values (Be inclusive, Be Trustworthy, Be a Learner and Be Driven) in addition to demonstrating a strong technical acumen.

Frequently cited statistics show that women and underrepresented classes will only apply to roles if they feel they meet 100% of the qualifications. At Valimail, we encourage you to break through that statistic. Roles evolve over time, especially with innovation, and you may be just the person we need in the future. NO ONE ever meets 100% of the qualifications. We hope you're open to learning new skills in order to grow with us. Make our team, your team!

What you will do

  • Hands-on Development: Spend 50% of your time in the codebase, delivering production-ready features and participating in the full development lifecycle within your scrum team.
  • Technical Stewardship: Drive architectural excellence and code quality by performing peer reviews and solving complex technical challenges alongside your team.
  • People Management: Own the end-to-end experience for your direct reports, including hiring, onboarding, and career development.
  • Performance Coaching: Lead regular 1:1s and performance reviews, providing mentorship and actionable feedback to help your engineers grow.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Collaborate regularly with the Senior Director and Principal Engineer to provide technical insights that shape the R&D roadmap and vision.
  • Roadmap Execution: Translate high-level product goals into actionable engineering milestones, ensuring alignment with broader business objectives.
  • Culture Advocacy: Foster a collaborative and creative team environment that encourages innovation, open brainstorming, and problem-solving.

What you will have

  • Technical Authority: You have deep expertise in our tech stack and can “lead from the trenches,” writing high-quality code while mentoring others on best practices and architectural standards.
  • Strategic Thinker: You are able to see the big picture, connecting daily technical decisions to broader business goals while helping R&D translate high-level vision into actionable milestones.
  • Collaboration-Oriented: You thrive in cross-functional environments and are committed to building strong partnerships across R&D leadership, Product, and your peers to reinforce a creative team culture.
  • Influential Communicator: You can inspire, motivate, and align engineers and stakeholders through clear, persuasive communication—whether you are conducting a 1:1, a performance review, or an R&D leadership sync.
  • Execution & Operational Discipline: You possess the organizational skills to manage the "business" of leadership—such as hiring workflows and performance cycles—without losing momentum on your technical commitments.
  • Empathetic Leadership: You are genuinely passionate about people development, balancing technical problem-solving with active listening and a commitment to the growth and well-being of your direct reports.
  • Adaptable and Resilient: You are comfortable navigating the ambiguity of a dual-track role, successfully managing shifting priorities and evolving organizational needs while keeping your team focused.

Nice to have

  • Comfortable leveraging metrics and analytics to inform technical decisions, optimize team performance, or measure impact.
  • You have a deep appreciation for (or experience with) refining Scrum processes, helping the team find the perfect balance between velocity and code quality.
  • A track record of experimenting with new tools, frameworks, or processes to drive creative solutions and improve engineering practices.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay + participation in employee stock option plan. The anticipated pay range for this role is 225K. Actual title and compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, + vision coverage
  • Six weeks of paid parental leave for all parents, and an additional 6 weeks for parents giving birth
  • Remote First Company, you can work anywhere within the US
  • Unlimited and flexible PTO. We believe balanced, happy, relaxed people do better work
