Where we work
Udemy is a global company headquartered in San Francisco, with additional U.S. offices in Denver and Austin, and international hubs in Australia, India, Ireland, Mexico, and Türkiye. This is an in-office position, requiring three days a week in the office (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and flexibility on Mondays and Fridays.

About the role
As Technical Accounting Manager, you will be a key operator and subject matter expert over several high-risk, high-complexity areas as Udemy scales as a public company. You will play a critical role balancing areas of accounting judgment with business and operational requirements, ensuring complete and accurate reporting of financial results. You will also have the opportunity to identify and implement process improvements and system solutions to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of how work gets done.
As an individual contributor role, this position regularly communicates with, coaches, and influences numerous cross-functional stakeholders in a manager-like capacity. This role reports to the Assistant Controller and regularly works with internal team members across GL accounting, SEC Reporting, Finance, Legal, Procurement, and Engineering, as well as with external auditors.
What you'll be doing:
Oversee recurring monthly close activities in high-risk areas including stock-based compensation, capitalized internal-use software, equity transactions, costs to implement and modify cloud computing arrangements, legal contingencies, and leasing activities.
Work cross-functionally on a regular basis with internal stakeholders across engineering, IT, corporate and revenue accounting, SEC reporting, internal audit, equity administration, real estate, and legal.
Prepare recurring SEC reporting requirements under US GAAP, including select financial statements and footnote disclosures.
Research complex and non-routine transactions, including but not limited to ASC 718 - Stock Compensation, ASC 505 - Equity, ASC 842 - Leases, ASC 450 - Contingencies, ASC 350 - Intangibles, and ASC 805 - Business Combinations; and prepare supporting policy memos and other documentation.
Serve as the primary accounting subject matter expert regarding the accounting information systems used in your processes, such as Jellyfish and Equity Edge Online.
Participate in annual audit and quarterly review procedures performed by external auditors, including preparation of support items and responding to auditor questions.
Perform key internal control activities in compliance with Sarbanes–Oxley, and continuously assess the existing control environment for potential gaps and enhancements.
Prepare support for statutory audits of international subsidiaries under local accounting standards.
Manage concurrent ongoing projects, ensuring accounting requirements are met while adhering to deadlines.
Assist in ad-hoc projects as needed.
What you’ll have
5+ years of progressive experience in the accounting field; experience in technology or software-as-a-service (SaaS) industries highly preferred.
3+ years of experience in public accounting, preferably with a Big 4 firm.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) highly preferred.
Strong understanding of US GAAP, including a propensity for research and the ability to apply technical expertise to business-specific facts and circumstances.
Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently with limited daily direction from manager to accomplish objectives and deadlines.
Strong understanding of effective internal control design, implementation and operation.
Experience with NetSuite, Jellyfish, Alteryx, and Equity Edge Online is a plus.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
