About the Firm

Our client is a well-established, boutique public accounting firm providing high-touch tax and advisory services to closely held businesses and individuals. Known for its technical depth, client-first mindset, and collaborative culture, the firm delivers thoughtful, practical tax solutions across a wide range of entity structures. As the firm continues to grow, they are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to play a key role in both client service and team leadership.

This role is ideal for a strong tax professional who is also entrepreneurial. You’ll be supported in building your own book of business over time, with a commission-based bonus structure that is outside the norm for accounting. There are no quotas, but the firm believes nurturing your growth and business development skills is crucial—for you and for the team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and prepare complex federal and state tax returns for individuals and closely held businesses, including Forms 1040, 1120, 1120S, and 1065.

  • Lead tax engagements from planning through completion, maintaining high standards for accuracy, timeliness, and client communication.

  • Provide proactive tax planning and advisory services, including tax projections and scenario-based planning to support client decision-making.

  • Confidently discuss cash flow considerations with clients and connect tax strategy to practical business outcomes.

  • Serve as a technical resource to the team, reviewing work, resolving complex issues, and ensuring quality control across returns and deliverables.

  • Train, mentor, and develop staff and senior-level accountants through coaching and review.

  • Develop and grow client relationships, contributing to business development through networking, referrals, and expanding existing relationships.

  • Work primarily in CCH Axcess (tax) and CCH Engagement (accounting), with Lacerte used in the background. Familiarity with other platforms such as Drake is a plus

Requirements
  • 4–8 years of dedicated tax experience in public accounting.

  • Strong experience in a boutique or small-to-mid-sized firm environment with hands-on exposure to 1040, 1120, 1120S, and 1065 work.

  • Experience bridging tax and accounting conversations—able to advise clients on cash flow, projections, and planning in preparation for tax reviews.

  • CPA or EA preferred but not required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take ownership—must be a self-starter with a roll-up-your-sleeves mentality.

  • Prior review and/or leadership experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong communication skills and confidence interacting directly with clients.

  • Interest in business development and relationship-building—someone who is an accountant, but also motivated to bring in business over time (no quotas).

  • Experience with CAS, broader accounting workflows, or audit is a bonus.

  • Ability to work 9–5 Central Time.

Benefits
  • Competitive base salary with a discretionary tax season bonus

  • Tiered commission structure on your book of business

  • 401(k) with profit sharing component

  • Medical insurance (PPO or HMO) with HSA compatibility
