Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

The Hadley Systems Engineering team is responsible for maintaining system level expertise of the Hadley Engine System. This involves designing and executing development and qualification test campaigns, failure investigation ownership, and risk mitigation for the entire engine system. This role will be responsible for ownership of engine system modeling tools to advance internal objectives and ensure successful missions for our customers. Success on this team requires an understanding of liquid rocket propulsion fundamentals, mechanical and fluid systems, strong critical thinking skills, attention to detail, organization, flexibility, effective communication across discipline groups, and an eagerness to learn new skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, execute, and document system- and component-level development and qualification test campaigns
  • Track requirement verification status through product development and qualification
  • Autonomously own, manage, and mitigate high-priority risks and failure investigations in collaboration with subsystem REs and supporting teams
  • Generate, maintain, and utilize engine system level models to predict and verify internal and external engine performance requirements
  • Review test and analysis plans and reports to assist with confirmation that requirements are met
  • Create and manage system engineering tools and processes
  • Develop subject matter expertise for the Hadley Engine System

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or other applicable discipline
  • 2+ years of practical liquid rocket engine experience
  • Thorough comprehension of rocket engine cycles
  • Hands-on hardware experience with fluid/mechanical systems, including but not limited to cryogenic systems, high pressure fluids, or combustors.
  • Programming competency in any language
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and stay flexible based on customer demands and company priorities along with daily firefighting
  • Desire to take ownership and help wherever needed on the team

Desired Experience:

  • Master's in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • Programming competency in Python and/or MATLAB
  • Prior track record leading technical teams
  • Liquid propellant rocket engine design, test, or analysis
  • Experience with compliance with SMC-S-025
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS or JAMA
  • Experience with valve, turbopump, or combustion device design and testing
  • Experience with analysis or simulation software packages (CFD, FEA, ROCETS, GFFSP, etc.)
  • Experience with CAD modeling (especially Siemens NX)
