Job Summary
Medical Technologist (Medical Laboratory Scientist) Section Supervisor resolves quickly and efficiently testing and equipment technical problems, oversees operations and develops recommendations for new or alternative equipment, methods, or materials. In addition to performing regular Medical Technology duties, assigns, trains, reviews and participates in the work of a group of Medical Technologist engaged in the performance of a variety of standardized laboratory tests within a prescribed departmental area. The Section Supervisor ensures regulatory compliance and competencies for the area of responsibility.
Essential Functions:

  • Maintains inventory and lean practices to avoid waste and keep the department within budget. (20%)
  • Ensures section is compliant with regulatory and accrediting agencies and develops plans when inspections require improvements. (10%)
  • Ensure policies and procedures are kept up to date for regulatory compliance. (10%)
  • Recognizes and troubleshoots instruments, procedures, and/or staff issues in a timely manner and initiates appropriate corrective actions. (10%)
  • Develops and reviews all aspects of the quality control program for the department. This includes but is not limited to QC review, proficiency testing, training or re-training, competencies, preventative maintenance, and environmental controls. (5%)
  • Performs appropriate validation procedures of new methods and instruments in a timely manner and in compliance with regulatory agencies. (5%)
  • Completes all documentation required by Human Resources when hiring new employees. (5%)
  • Sets clear expectations for staff with behaviors, testing compliance and productivity through communications, mentoring and setting of developmental goals. (5%)
  • Completes yearly evaluations in a timely manner providing staff with documented feedback and action plans for growth and improvement. (5%)
  • Completes coaching and disciplinary actions in a timely manner after careful investigation. (5%)
  • Ensures compliance with time and attendance, dress code, behavior, and safe environment of care practices of staff working in the laboratory in accordance with regulatory agencies. (5%)
  • Holds oneself accountable and responsible for operations of the section through leadership and direction to ensure appropriate scheduling, as well as timely and accurate testing. (5%)
  • Demonstrates skills in accomplishing operations of the section through personal organization and time management, adaptability, motivation, and good decision making. (5%)
  • Performs routine rounding to ensure collaboration, understanding of issues, and workflow while observing staff work performance. (5%)

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree Required

Work Experience:

  • 4-6 years A minimum of four years of laboratory experience

Licenses:

  • MLSASCP-Medical Laboratory Scientist or equivalent - ASCP - American Society for Clinical Pathology Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in regulatory compliance in QC/QA and competency requirements.
  • Skilled in laboratory operations of the department and managing technical staff.
  • Good communication and customer relation skills to ensure patient safety and quality processes in the laboratory.
  • Ability to perpetuate teamwork
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work within the department.
  • Ability to troubleshoot testing, equipment, and quality issues relative to testing in the area of oversight.
