About The Role
This role will play a pivotal function within the technology organization at The Athletic, orchestrating critical, highly complex initiatives and aligning teams of engineers, data scientists, and cross-functional partners to execute seamlessly. As a Staff Technical Program Manager, you will apply deep technical fluency and program leadership to orchestrate complex, cross-platform initiatives shaped by architectural strategy. You will drive execution alignment for initiatives shaped by strategic, architectural, and operational alignment. This is an advanced individual contributor role, and you will be critical to the success and scalability of our technology stack.
Responsibilities
- Look 12–36 months ahead; Be able to plan complex migrations, infrastructure overhauls, and multi-year technical initiatives.
- Be accountable for the above, while keeping in mind scalability and maintainability.
- Enable engineering to ship with quality, security, and speed.
- Proactively identify bottlenecks and mitigate technical risks.
- Operate with minimal oversight and transparent communication.
- Align engineering teams around shared technical goals and release schedules.
- Foster a highly collaborative environment within the Technology Organization.
Requirements
- 8+ years of relevant experience in Technical Program Management, Engineering Management, or as a Software/Systems Engineer leading cross-functional projects.
- Technical domain expertise — you are expected to hit the ground running, actively read technical design documents, and create immediate impact.
- Exceptional systems-level thinking with the ability to partner effectively with Architecture and Engineering leadership to translate strategic direction into executable roadmaps.
- A bias to action, rallying disparate technical teams to deliver results on time.
- Excellence with data - analyzing data, deriving insights, and making data-driven decisions.
- Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to influence technical architects and drive alignment with non-technical stakeholders.
The annual base salary range for this role is $165,000.00 - $180,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location.
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
