About the Role: 

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Staff Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping our reporting strategy, analytics architecture, and customer-facing data experiences. This individual will serve as a technical and thought leader, leveraging deep expertise to design and implement cutting-edge reporting solutions that make the best use of our data platform. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience with modern analytics tools, application development, and data visualization technologies, with a strong understanding of underlying data infrastructure. We are looking for someone who not only excels in building robust reporting applications, but will also drive innovation by discovering new ways to transform data into actionable insights that enhance customer experiences and power smarter business decisions. You'll partner closely with Data Engineering to help build trusted, performant and scalable reporting products while focusing on the application layer that brings our data to life for users.

What You’ll Do...

Technical Leadership:

  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable, reliable, and performant reporting applications and analytics solutions.
  • Establish best practices and frameworks for application development, data visualization, and analytics engineering, ensuring performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Mentor and collaborate with team members, fostering growth and innovation in both technical and analytical skills.
  • Help guide and lead more junior engineers to deliver on key outcomes for the team.

Application Development:

  • Build and optimize customer-facing reporting applications using .NET C# and React.
  • Architect responsive, intuitive user interfaces that make complex data accessible and actionable.
  • Develop robust APIs and backend services to power reporting functionality.
  • Ensure application performance, security, and scalability across the full stack.

Analytics Engineering:

  • Design and implement data transformations and models using DBT to support reporting needs.
  • Build efficient SQL queries and stored procedures to extract insights from large datasets.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering to optimize data pipelines for reporting use cases.
  • Create and maintain data marts and analytical models in Snowflake.

Data Visualization and Business Intelligence:

  • Develop compelling dashboards and reports using Looker and custom visualization solutions.
  • Partner with stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical reporting solutions.
  • Design self-service analytics capabilities that empower users to explore data independently.
  • Establish data storytelling best practices across the organization.

Cloud and Infrastructure Understanding:

  • Leverage AWS services to build and deploy reporting applications at scale.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams to ensure optimal performance and cost efficiency.
  • Implement monitoring and observability for reporting applications and data workflows.

Innovation and Strategy:

  • Stay ahead of industry trends in analytics, business intelligence, and data visualization.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance our reporting capabilities and customer data experiences.
  • Drive technical decisions that align with business objectives and customer needs.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Partner closely with Data Engineering to understand and leverage our data platform capabilities.
  • Work with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to deliver impactful reporting solutions.
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences, from engineers to business leaders

What You Bring...

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in application development with a strong focus on analytics and reporting engineering.
  • Expertise in modern application development technologies, including C# .NET, React, and RESTful API design.
  • Strong proficiency with database technologies and advanced SQL skills, including experience with Snowflake, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and data warehouse optimization.
  • Extensive experience in analytics engineering, including data modeling, transformation frameworks (DBT), and building scalable reporting solutions.
  • Advanced knowledge of AWS cloud services, particularly those supporting application deployment and data analytics.
  • Proficiency in business intelligence and data visualization tools, with hands-on experience in Looker or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of data infrastructure concepts, ETL/ELT processes, and data pipeline architecture (implementation experience preferred but not required).
  • Experience building customer-facing analytics products, dashboards, and self-service reporting capabilities.
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools for application performance and data quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Strong mentorship and technical leadership experience, with a track record of guiding junior engineers.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders.

It’s a bonus if you...

  • Have experience in the cannabis industry or retail/e-commerce environments, with an understanding of complex regulatory and compliance reporting requirements.
  • Possess hands-on data engineering experience, including building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines or data infrastructure.
  • Have a history of contributing to open source projects, demonstrating community engagement and technical leadership.
  • Experience with additional cloud platforms such as Azure or GCP.
  • Knowledge of real-time analytics, event streaming, or distributed data processing systems.
  • Experience leading small-medium sized development teams or analytics engineering initiatives.

You’ll Get…

We are targeting a starting salary of $162,000 - $220,000 based on the intended level for this role. 

In addition to cash compensation, our total rewards package includes:
