At Matterworks we are building AI tools to extract insights from the ever-growing corpora of biological data and to unlock opportunities in therapeutic discovery, development, and manufacturing. We are building large-scale deep learning models of biological data to predict the phenotype and behavior of biological systems.
Position Overview
As a Staff Machine Learning Scientist, you will be a key technical leader responsible for designing and building our core deep learning models. You will tackle some of our most challenging technical projects, translating high-level scientific goals into robust and effective neural network architectures that can interpret complex mass spectrometry data. This role requires a deep, hands-on understanding of deep learning principles and a passion for building high-quality, impactful models.
Key Responsibilities
Bespoke Model Architecture and Development: Design and build novel deep learning models, with a focus on creating custom architectures tailored to our specific scientific domains and data modalities.
Technical Project Leadership: Lead the technical execution of complex machine learning projects from conception to deployment. This includes defining technical requirements, designing experiments, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality models.
Hands-On Implementation: Be deeply involved in the coding and implementation of our models using PyTorch and NumPy. You will be expected to write clean, efficient, and well-tested code.
Research and Innovation: Stay current with the latest research in deep learning and its applications in chemistry and biology. Propose and prototype new ideas to enhance our modeling capabilities.
Collaboration and Mentorship: Collaborate closely with other scientists and engineers on the team. Mentor junior members and contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing and technical growth.
Qualifications
Ph.D. or M.S. in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
5+ years of hands-on experience in building and deploying deep learning models.
Strong proficiency in Python, PyTorch and NumPy is required.
Proven experience in designing and implementing novel neural network architectures. A portfolio of projects or publications demonstrating this is highly valued.
Experience with machine learning for spectral analysis, structure prediction, or molecular representation learning is a strong plus.
A track record of contributing to impactful projects with a clear demonstration of your technical contributions.
Familiarity with scientific data formats (e.g., HDF5, mzML, Zarr).
Given the cross-disciplinary and innovative nature of our work, effective collaboration and communication are critical to our progress. We operate in a flexible hybrid model that accommodates both fully remote team members and those who work full-time from our Somerville, MA office. While some positions may require regular in-person presence for hands-on work or local collaboration, many roles can be performed remotely with team members distributed across various locations.
Compensation and BenefitsMatterworks offers a competitive base salary, stock options, and benefits (health & dental, vision, long- and short-term disability, life insurance, 401k with company match). Employees enjoy a flexible work & unlimited time away policy, commuter benefits and parking, regular team meals and outings, and company support for continued education/coursework and conference participation.
