Lead the design and delivery of complex AI systems, mentor engineers, and collaborate on AI roadmaps to improve personalized nutrition and care access.
About us:
Foodsmart is the leading telenutrition and foodcare solution, backed by a robust network of Registered Dietitians. Our platform is designed to foster healthier food choices, drive lasting behavior change, and deliver long-term health outcomes. Through our highly personalized, digital platform, we guide our 2.2 million members—including those in employer-sponsored health plans, regional and national Medicaid managed care organizations, Medicare Advantage plans, and commercial insurers—on a tailored journey to eating well while saving time and money.
Foodsmart seamlessly integrates dietary assessments and nutrition counseling with online food ordering and cost-effective meal planning for the entire family, optimizing ingredients both at home and on the go. We partner with national and regional retailers across the U.S., many of whom accept SNAP/EBT, making healthier food more accessible. Additionally, we assist members with SNAP enrollment and management, providing tangible access to nutritious food.In 2024, Foodsmart secured a $200 million investment from TPG’s Rise Fund, which supports entrepreneurs dedicated to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This investment will help us expand our reach, particularly to low-income workers who are disproportionately affected by diet-related diseases.
At Foodsmart, our mission is to make nutritious food accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of economic status. We are committed to a set of core values that shape our culture and work environment:
Measured: We make data-driven, truth-seeking decisions.
Impactful: We are fueled by achieving our mission and vision.
Collaborative: We help each other be better and create a positive environment.
Hungry: We maintain a healthy growth mindset, seeking to overcome challenges with courage.
Joyful: We take joy in each other, our work, and the privilege of doing this work.
Whether you're a dietitian, a commercial leader, or a technologist, working at Foodsmart means being part of a team that is passionate, supportive, and driven by a shared purpose. Join us in transforming the way people access and enjoy healthy food.
About the role:
The AI Engineering team at Foodsmart is reimagining how AI can improve access to personalized nutrition and care. From conversational chatbots and intelligent scheduling systems to predictive modeling for no-show prevention and behavioral segmentation, we power scalable experiences across our platform. The Staff AI Engineer will lead the design and delivery of complex, cross-functional AI systems that support marketing, care operations, and member engagement. You’ll collaborate with product and data teams, mentor engineers, and drive architectural decisions that enable our AI systems to perform reliably at scale. We're looking for a technical leader who’s eager to build innovative solutions, guide others, and align our AI strategy with real-world impact.
You will
- Lead the design and implementation of high-performance, scalable backend systems and application using TypeScript, Node.js, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
- Architect robust APIs and services that integrate seamlessly with AI/ML models and serve real-time or batch use cases
- Drive the adaptation and fine-tuning of off-the-shelf models (e.g., LLMs, classification models) for business-critical domain tasks in areas like healthcare, finance, or customer support
- Collaborate cross-functionally with ML engineers, product managers, and infrastructure teams to deliver end-to-end ML applications
- Own backend and MLOps architecture decisions to ensure long-term scalability, performance, and maintainability
- Set engineering standards, code quality expectations, and best practices for integrating ML models into production
- Mentor other backend and ML engineers, promoting growth and technical excellence across the team
- Evaluate and recommend technologies that support the AI platform’s evolution
You are:
- A technical leader with strong software engineering foundations and a track record of owning large-scale backend systems
- Adept at balancing hands-on coding with technical strategy, architectural design, and system-level thinking
- Experienced in backend development using Node.js, TypeScript, and SQL-based RDBMS
- Deeply familiar with deploying and adapting AI/ML models to production, especially fine-tuning foundation models for specific use cases
- Able to effectively communicate technical trade-offs with stakeholders and guide cross-functional alignment
- Committed to building resilient, observable, and secure systems in production environments
- Passionate about unlocking the value of machine learning in real-world applications, not just experimentation
You have:
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 2+ years in a staff or principal engineering role
- 3+ years of backend development experience using TypeScript and Node.js, with demonstrated ownership of production services
- 1+ years of experience applying machine learning or AI models, including fine-tuning pre-trained models (e.g., Hugging Face, OpenAI, or similar)
- Proficient in SQL, with hands-on experience using RDBMS like PostgreSQL or MySQL
- Experience designing, deploying, and scaling APIs and ML-backed services in cloud-native environments (AWS/GCP)
- Familiarity with MLOps practices, containerization (Docker), and orchestration tools (Kubernetes, Airflow, MLflow)
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
