Staff Accountant responsible for accounts receivable, collections, payment application, invoicing, revenue reconciliation, expense management, and month-end close support. The role prepares proposed journal entries, maintains reconciliations and audit-ready documentation, supports internal controls, and partners with internal teams and clients to resolve billing issues. Requires accounting or bookkeeping experience, AR and GL knowledge, revenue recognition basics, and intermediate Excel skills.

This role sits within the Finance function and supports the accounts receivable and monthly close cycle for HousingWire's advertising, sponsorship, and subscription revenue streams. The Staff Accountant owns day-to-day AR activity, payment application, invoicing, and revenue reconciliation, and prepares proposed month-end entries for review and posting by the Accounting Supervisor.
What You'll Do
Accounts Receivable, Collections & Invoicing
- Drive collections follow-ups across multiple business lines and revenue streams; keep AR aging notes current and escalate past-due accounts per policy.
- Apply incoming payments (checks, ACH, wire transfers) accurately and timely to the correct customer accounts; resolve short payments, mismatches, and unapplied cash.
- Prepare and send invoices — including prebills, renewals, and affiliate content invoices — in Bill.com; coordinate invoice timing with revenue schedules.
Reconciliations & Close Support
- Perform revenue reconciliation (unearned and unbilled) against invoicing to prevent overbilling or underbilling for prepaid and installment customers; update schedules and propose adjustments.
- Prepare proposed month-end entries — revenue recognition, accruals, deferrals, intercompany due to/from entries, and expense reimbursements — in spreadsheets for Accounting Supervisor review and posting.
- Support periodic review of transaction and account classifications; identify categories to add, consolidate, or retire as the business evolves.
Expense Management
- Sync and classify corporate card transactions; ensure expense submissions comply with company policy; escalate missing receipts; maintain accurate and current transaction records for Accounting Supervisor review and reconciliation.
Controls, Documentation & Cross-Functional Support
- Maintain close checklists, reconciliation reports, standard operating procedures, and audit-ready backup.
- Partner with internal teams to resolve billing and collections issues.
- Follow internal controls and US GAAP.
Who You Are
You are a detail-oriented accounting professional who is comfortable owning a recurring close cycle. You communicate clearly with both internal teams and external clients, and you surface issues early.
You'll Need
- 2+ years in accounting or bookkeeping, with direct experience in AR, GL, and revenue support.
- Strong working knowledge of debits and credits, accruals, and revenue recognition basics.
- Intermediate Excel skills — filters, lookups, and pivot tables — and high attention to detail.
Helpful But Not Required
- Professional collections communication experience in a B2B environment.
- Background in media, advertising, events, subscription, or SaaS.
