About the job

This position is needed to hone and drive our patent and open source strategy. This role will be primarily focused on patent matters and managing open source issues.  The role will also involve IP licensing, copyright, and IP diligence/integration for M&A activities. Reporting to the Sr. Dir., IP, this position will work closely with the engineering, product, corporate development, and integration teams. 

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • Develop and execute on Twilio’s patent strategy; engage with our engineering and product teams to mine and protect inventions and help lead the prosecution and management of US and foreign patent applications.
  • Manage and analyze IP licensing and litigation matters.
  • Develop and manage policies for both the use and release of open source material and counsel on open source licensing and compliance.
  • Assist in M&A due diligence and the review of intellectual property provisions in M&A and commercial agreements.
  • Work on technology transactions, standards bodies, and patent strategy organizations.
  • Present complex legal and technical concepts clearly and persuasively to executive leadership and non-legal audiences.

*Required:

  • Due to the expectations of the role, we require a J.D. with strong academic credentials and 10+ years demonstrated record of success as a lawyer, licensed by the USPTO, and eligible to practice law
  • 3-5 years of in-house experience as an IP attorney;
  • BS or MS in computer science or equivalent technical experience is also highly preferred. 
  • Experience with patent prosecution in SaaS, cloud platforms, and/or telecommunications technologies. 
  • Some patent litigation experience.
  • Experience advising on or managing open source issues.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to advocate for a position while maintaining a collaborative and open-minded approach. 
  • Ability to appropriately triage a heavy workflow, setting appropriate priorities with clients and delivering results efficiently.
  • Good sense of humor, interest in learning new things and desire to get things done.


Location

This role will be remote, but is not eligible to be hired in CA, CT, NJ, NY, PA, WA. 


Travel 

We prioritize connection and opportunities to build relationships with our customers and each other. For this role, you may be required to travel occasionally to participate in project or team in-person meetings.

Compensation

*Please note this role is open to candidates outside of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Washington D.C., and Washington State. The information below is provided for candidates hired in those locations only.


The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:

  • Based in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont or Washington D.C. : $167,800 - 209,700.
  • Based in New York, New Jersey, Washington State, or California (outside of the San Francisco Bay area): $177,700 - $222,100.
  • Based in the San Francisco Bay area, California: $197,400 - $246,700.
  • This role may be eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and corporate bonus plan. All roles are generally eligible for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location.
