You will be expected to utilize AI coding assistants and LLMs proficiently to accelerate development velocity, generate boilerplate, and troubleshoot complex debugging scenarios. Beyond simple usage, this role requires the critical judgment to verify AI-generated outputs for security, performance, and accuracy. You should be comfortable integrating AI tooling into your daily workflow to eliminate repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on high-impact architectural and strategic engineering challenges.

About the Team

The News & Insights Team is responsible for delivering differentiated consumer experiences through trusted insights, market trends, and timely news content that creates confidence across the housing journey. Our mission is to help consumers make informed decisions by surfacing relevant property insights, neighborhood data, market intelligence, and real estate news.

Key focus areas include:

  • News & Insights component experiences on web and mobile
  • Consumer Insights personalization and ML-driven recommendations
  • Market data visualization and trends
  • Property-level insights (home value, neighborhood stats, market conditions)
  • Content engagement and discovery features

The Role

As an Engineering Manager you will lead a cross-functional squad of 5-8 engineers, partnering closely with Product Management, Design, and Data Science to deliver impactful consumer experiences. You will own the technical delivery of your team's roadmap while coaching and developing your engineers' careers.

This role balances people leadership, technical strategy, and execution excellence—you are accountable for your team's commitments, delivery, and the growth of each team member.

What You'll Do

People Leadership

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of 5-8 software engineers across various levels
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, and support career development
  • Own performance management including goal setting, reviews, and growth plans
  • Build a healthy, collaborative, and inclusive team culture
  • Partner with recruiting to hire and onboard top engineering talent

Technical Strategy & Delivery

  • Partner with Product to define and prioritize the team roadmap
  • Ensure high-quality, scalable, and reliable delivery of features and services
  • Drive technical decisions in collaboration with Tech Leads and Architects
  • Maintain visibility into team progress, risks, and dependencies
  • Own operational excellence: on-call rotations, incident response, and SLAs

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product Managers, Designers, QA, and Analytics partners
  • Coordinate with other engineering teams (Consumer Services, Mobile, Platform)
  • Communicate team status, priorities, and blockers to leadership
  • Participate in quarterly planning and OKR alignment

Process & Continuous Improvement

  • Drive agile practices and refine team ceremonies (standups, retros, refinement)
  • Identify and remove blockers to improve team velocity
  • Champion engineering best practices, code quality, and technical debt reduction

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience with 2+ years in engineering management
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience managing teams of 4-8 engineers in an agile environment
  • Strong technical background in modern web technologies (React, TypeScript, Node.js, GraphQL)
  • Experiencing building or leading teams that build high-traffic Wordpress and/or WordPress VIP solutions using custom themes, plugins, and decoupled React front-ends.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
  • Proven track record of delivering consumer-facing products at scale
  • Excellent communication skills—written and verbal
  • Experience with performance management, hiring, and team development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in consumer tech, media, or content-driven products
  • Familiarity with data-driven product development and A/B testing
  • Experience with ML/AI-powered features or personalization systems
  • Background in news, content, or insights-focused product areas
  • Experience with mobile app development teams (iOS/Android)
