Senior Java Software Engineer

As a Senior Java Software Engineer, you will design and build backend services, APIs, and integrations that help healthcare data move securely and reliably across complex environments. Your work will contribute to stronger interoperability, better access to information, and more responsive mission decisions.

What You Will Do
- Design, develop, test, and maintain Java applications and backend services
- Build secure REST APIs and system integrations using Spring Boot and related technologies
- Develop services that ingest, validate, transform, and exchange healthcare data
- Integrate applications with relational databases, data platforms, and downstream systems
- Create and maintain API documentation using OpenAPI, Swagger, or similar specifications
- Collaborate with software, data, platform, and DevSecOps engineers throughout the delivery lifecycle
- Deploy and support applications in secure, compliance-driven cloud environments
- Diagnose and resolve application, integration, performance, and production issues
- Strengthen automated testing, observability, documentation, and code quality
- Translate technical and mission requirements into scalable, maintainable software solutions
What You Bring
- Five or more years of professional software engineering experience
- Recent hands-on Java backend development experience
- Experience building production applications or services with Spring, Spring Boot, or a comparable Java framework
- Experience designing and developing REST APIs, microservices, or system integrations
- Experience working with SQL, relational databases, and data-driven applications
- Familiarity with API specifications and documentation practices
- Experience testing, deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting production software
- Ability to write secure, maintainable, testable, and well-documented code
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Active DoD Secret clearance or higher
Preferred Experience
You do not need to meet every preferred qualification. Relevant experience in one or more of the following areas will strengthen your candidacy:
- Federal healthcare or other public-sector technology programs
- Healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR, HL7, OMOP, or CDA
- AWS, AWS GovCloud, or another secure cloud environment
- Kubernetes, Docker, or containerized application deployment
- CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps delivery practices
- NIST 800-53, FISMA, HIPAA, RMF, ATO, or comparable compliance frameworks
- OpenAPI, Swagger, or API-governance practices
- Apache Airflow, Apache Spark, dbt, Apache Iceberg, or related data technologies
- Prometheus, Grafana, centralized logging, or other observability tools
- Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code platform
- OCR, natural-language processing, or AI/ML-enabled integrations
- Python or C# as an additional programming language
