Build Secure Software That Improves Federal Healthcare

Join Rackner to develop secure, cloud-native software supporting mission-critical federal healthcare systems.

As a Senior Java Software Engineer, you will design and build backend services, APIs, and integrations that help healthcare data move securely and reliably across complex environments. Your work will contribute to stronger interoperability, better access to information, and more responsive mission decisions.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Take meaningful ownership of production Java services and integrations
  • Deepen your expertise in secure, cloud-native software engineering
  • Work with healthcare interoperability standards and high-compliance systems
  • Collaborate with experienced software, data, cloud, and DevSecOps professionals
  • Expand your technical scope through company-supported training and certifications
  • Contribute to technology with visible public-sector and healthcare impact

What You Will Do

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain Java applications and backend services
  • Build secure REST APIs and system integrations using Spring Boot and related technologies
  • Develop services that ingest, validate, transform, and exchange healthcare data
  • Integrate applications with relational databases, data platforms, and downstream systems
  • Create and maintain API documentation using OpenAPI, Swagger, or similar specifications
  • Collaborate with software, data, platform, and DevSecOps engineers throughout the delivery lifecycle
  • Deploy and support applications in secure, compliance-driven cloud environments
  • Diagnose and resolve application, integration, performance, and production issues
  • Strengthen automated testing, observability, documentation, and code quality
  • Translate technical and mission requirements into scalable, maintainable software solutions

What You Bring

  • Five or more years of professional software engineering experience
  • Recent hands-on Java backend development experience
  • Experience building production applications or services with Spring, Spring Boot, or a comparable Java framework
  • Experience designing and developing REST APIs, microservices, or system integrations
  • Experience working with SQL, relational databases, and data-driven applications
  • Familiarity with API specifications and documentation practices
  • Experience testing, deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting production software
  • Ability to write secure, maintainable, testable, and well-documented code
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or higher

Preferred Experience

You do not need to meet every preferred qualification. Relevant experience in one or more of the following areas will strengthen your candidacy:

  • Federal healthcare or other public-sector technology programs
  • Healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR, HL7, OMOP, or CDA
  • AWS, AWS GovCloud, or another secure cloud environment
  • Kubernetes, Docker, or containerized application deployment
  • CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps delivery practices
  • NIST 800-53, FISMA, HIPAA, RMF, ATO, or comparable compliance frameworks
  • OpenAPI, Swagger, or API-governance practices
  • Apache Airflow, Apache Spark, dbt, Apache Iceberg, or related data technologies
  • Prometheus, Grafana, centralized logging, or other observability tools
  • Terraform or another infrastructure-as-code platform
  • OCR, natural-language processing, or AI/ML-enabled integrations
  • Python or C# as an additional programming language

Why Rackner

At Rackner, you will have the opportunity to build technology that supports critical healthcare and public-sector missions.

You will work on more than isolated development tasks. This role combines hands-on engineering, production ownership, and close collaboration across software, data, cloud, and mission-focused teams.

Rackner has delivered more than $30 million in recent federal awards and supports mission-critical work across defense, civilian, and public-sector environments. We are looking for an engineer who can build on that momentum by delivering secure, dependable software that improves interoperability and mission outcomes.

Benefits & Professional Growth

  • Competitive compensation
  • Company-supported certifications aligned with current and future program work
  • 401(k) with 100% company match up to 6%
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Remote-work support and home-office equipment plan
  • Fitness and wellness reimbursement
  • Weekly pay schedule
  • Professional-development and future growth opportunities

Apply

If you are a cleared Java engineer who wants to build secure software with meaningful public-sector impact, we would like to hear from you.

Please be prepared to discuss a recent Java backend service, API, or integration you helped design, build, deploy, or support. We are interested in understanding your individual responsibilities, the technologies you used, the challenges you addressed, and the outcome of your work.
