The Team:
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our newly established Financial Operations Engineering team, which will be a critical part of our Finance, Accounting, and Treasury organizations. This team’s mission is to unlock smarter financial planning by building scalable systems that improve data accessibility, automate complex financial workflows and reporting, and provide deeper insights to drive strategic decision-making.
In this role, you will contribute to the development of end-to-end financial systems. You’ll work closely with more senior engineers and cross-functional teams to build and maintain the technical infrastructure that powers our financial operations. Your work will involve collaborating with stakeholders to streamline manual processes, build automation tools, and ensure our financial platforms are secure and scalable.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a mid-level engineer to gain experience in both backend development and the financial systems domain. You’ll work on meaningful projects that have a direct impact on our company’s ability to plan, forecast, and make data-driven financial decisions. You will have the opportunity to learn from our senior engineers, contribute to system architecture discussions, and grow your skills in cloud platforms, data modeling, and financial processes.
How you’ll make an impact
- Collaborate with senior engineers to develop and maintain systems that support finance, accounting, and treasury functions
- Assist in the design and implementation of automation tools to streamline financial workflows and reduce manual effort
- Work with business stakeholders to understand financial requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Contribute to the building of APIs, data pipelines, and integrations with third-party financial tools
- Ensure data integrity, security, and scalability of financial platforms
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and the deployment of high-quality code
- Support ongoing maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of financial systems to ensure reliability and performance
Minimum Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience in software development, with a strong focus on backend engineering, distributed systems, and APIs
- Experience with some or many of the following: Kotlin, Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, React, Next.js, Vercel
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and deploying applications in a cloud native environment
- Experience with microservices architecture and real-time data processing pipelines (Kafka, Spark, or similar)
- Familiarity with database technologies such as SQL and data warehousing solutions
- Good communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
- Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to learn and grow in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in building financial, accounting, or treasury systems or similar enterprise applications
- Prior experience or demonstrated enthusiasm for working on internal tools
- History of thriving in a variety of work environments: both collaborative and self-directed; remote and in-person
Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote
Time zone requirements The team operates on the East/West coast time zones.
Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
