Biotechnology is rewriting life as we know it, from the medicines we take, to the crops we grow, the materials we wear, and the household goods that we rely on every day. But moving at the new speed of science requires better technology.
Benchling’s mission is to unlock the power of biotechnology. The world’s most innovative biotech companies use Benchling’s R&D Cloud to power the development of breakthrough products and accelerate time to milestone and market.
Come help us bring modern software to modern science.
At Benchling, we’re building the data foundation that powers the future of life sciences R&D—and that means tackling hard, high-impact engineering challenges. As a Data Platform Engineer, you’ll help design and scale the infrastructure that enables real-time scientific discovery across our platform. You’ll work on multi-tenant systems, change data capture (CDC) pipelines, and distributed processing frameworks that connect data seamlessly across teams and products.
This is an opportunity to own initiatives end-to-end—from defining scope and writing functional specs, to building, deploying, and operating core systems at scale. You’ll collaborate closely with application engineers, platform architects, and product teams, setting the standard for data integrity, privacy, and reliability in both internal and customer-facing systems. The work you do here will have a direct line of sight to real-world health outcomes.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Build large-scale projects end-to-end, from backend models & APIs to frontend components that make data accessible to users.
- Design and operate data pipelines and services that guarantee integrity, privacy, and reliability across products.
- Partner with application engineers to design reusable patterns for ingesting and consuming scientific data.
Establish metrics and SLOs for performance and reliability, and iterate based on real-world product impact. - Create developer tooling that makes it easier for teams to build on and interact with the data platform.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product and Design to translate complex scientific workflows into intuitive, product-facing experiences.
- 2+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering impactful projects.
- Experience building both backend services (distributed systems, APIs) and user-facing functionality (React or similar).
- Proven ability to design and operate scalable data systems while keeping product usability in mind.
- Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or similar, with frontend experience in React or equivalent.
- Experience with distributed data frameworks (Kafka, Spark, Flink, etc.) is a plus.
- Ability to collaborate across product, design, and engineering to deliver seamless end-to-end solutions.
- Curiosity to learn about life sciences and the impact of data on scientific discovery.
Engineers join us for the technical challenges—and stay for the mission and culture.
“There’s a lot of software where you don’t know if it helps the world. Here, the mission and the moment are aligned—you know your work matters.” – Naomi, Software Engineer

- A collaborative environment where team members are generous with their time, knowledge, and ideas.
- Real ownership and respect for the IC track—your impact isn’t defined by whether you manage people.
- A platform that combines deep scientific domain complexity with best-in-class engineering practices.
- Flexible architecture and iterative development, not rigid year-long roadmaps.
The opportunity to help scientists and researchers accelerate breakthroughs in medicine, agriculture, and beyond.
Most importantly, you’ll join a mission-aligned, technically ambitious team that’s genuinely here to help each other succeed.
