Topstep is seeking a hands-on Senior Tax Analyst to support its growing U.S. and international tax function. This individual contributor role will be a key member of the Finance team and will help build a scalable, well-controlled in-house tax compliance function. The role will initially focus on recurring indirect tax compliance across U.S. sales and use tax, Canada GST/HST, EU VAT/OSS, Australia GST, and New Zealand GST, with responsibility expanding as Topstep registers and becomes compliant in additional jurisdictions. The Senior Tax Analyst will work closely with the Tax Director, Accounting, Treasury, People/Payroll, Legal, Operations, Avalara, and external tax advisors to ensure accurate filings, timely payments, complete journal entries and reconciliations, and strong supporting documentation. A key near-term objective is to support the transition of recurring indirect tax compliance in-house beginning with the January 2027 compliance cycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and support recurring indirect tax compliance across U.S. sales and use tax, Canada GST/HST, EU VAT/OSS, Australia GST, New Zealand GST, and additional jurisdictions as the compliance footprint expands.
  • Support the transition of recurring indirect tax compliance from external providers to the internal tax function beginning with the January 2027 compliance cycle.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly tax returns and supporting workpapers; ensure filings and related tax payments are completed accurately and on time.
  • Extract, validate, and reconcile tax data from NetSuite, Avalara, payment processors, and other source systems, and investigate differences between tax collected, reported, paid, and general ledger balances.
  • Prepare indirect tax journal entries, accruals, true-ups, and balance sheet account reconciliations, and maintain complete filing and payment support.
  • Maintain the tax compliance calendar, registrations, filing frequencies, portal access, tax IDs, deadlines, and filing/payment confirmations.
  • Coordinate with Avalara and external advisors on filings, data requests, notices, registrations, taxability matters, and open compliance issues.
  • Assist with responses to state, federal, and international tax notices, audits, and information requests, including maintaining an organized record of correspondence and resolutions.
  • Coordinate data gathering and workpaper support for federal, state, and international direct tax compliance, including returns, extensions, estimated payments, and tax provision support performed with external advisors.
  • Provide support to People/Payroll on state tax registrations, payroll tax notices, withholding compliance, and related filings as needed.
  • Research taxability, nexus, filing requirements, and new jurisdiction obligations and support implementation of new registrations and compliance processes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, documentation, controls, and automation, including effective use of Avalara, NetSuite, and other tax technology.
  • Partner with Finance, Accounting, Legal, Treasury, People/Payroll, and Operations on tax-related matters and support forecasting, exposure analyses, and other ad hoc tax projects.

Required Qualifications and Key Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
  • 4-7 years of progressive tax experience in a corporate, public accounting, or advisory environment.
  • Strong hands-on tax compliance, reconciliation, and Excel skills, with the ability to manage recurring monthly and quarterly deadlines across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience with U.S. sales and use tax and/or international VAT/GST compliance strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Avalara and NetSuite, including tax data extraction, reconciliation, or compliance workflows, strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting corporate income tax compliance and coordinating with external tax advisors preferred.
  • CPA, EA, MST, or similar tax/accounting credential preferred but not required.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with high attention to detail and accountability for personal deliverables.
  • Ability to operate as a hands-on individual contributor, prioritize competing deadlines, document processes, and collaborate effectively across Finance, Accounting, Legal, Treasury, People/Payroll, Operations, and external advisors.
