Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?
At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.
To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.
Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.
While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported.
Coinbase’s mission is to increase economic freedom in the world, and the Consumer Trading team plays a critical role in that vision by building the fastest, easiest, and most trusted crypto trading platform globally. The team is made up of engineers who take pride in high ownership, strong technical depth, and long-term thinking. We value team members who drive clarity in ambiguity, lead through influence, and raise the bar in engineering and product excellence.
We’re looking for a deeply technical Senior Staff Software Engineer with expertise in trading systems to help define and deliver the next generation of Coinbase’s trading platform. You’ll lead multi-quarter initiatives across orgs, mentor engineers, and shape critical technical architecture in trading -- from order lifecycle management to execution infrastructure.
What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):
- Drive the technical vision and execution of complex, multi-quarter projects across multiple engineering teams.
- Architect and build mission-critical trading systems, including order management, execution engines, and reliability infrastructure.
- Partner with PM, Design, and other functions to align product strategy with long-term technical bets.
- Deeply understand and influence our trading stack and product roadmap.
- Mentor and coach IC6s and below; help grow the next generation of trading and infrastructure leaders.
- Elevate engineering quality through design review, code review, and promoting best practices.
What we look for in you:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong track record of shipping large-scale distributed systems.
- Deep expertise in trading systems (traditional or crypto), with hands-on experience in areas like order management, execution algorithms, market data, or risk management.
- You are customer-obsessed and bring strong product intuition to technical decision-making.
- Proven ability to lead complex initiatives across organizational boundaries.
- Strong mentoring skills with a passion for leveling up teammates.
- Comfortable working in ambiguous environments with high stakes and high velocity.
- High bar for quality, correctness, and operational excellence.
Nice to haves:
- You’ve been part of a company that builds complicated trading systems
- Prior experience in financial markets, especially equities, FX, or crypto.
- Familiarity with regulated environments and designing for compliance and auditability.
- Experience working with Go or other performant backend languages.
- Contributions to open source or trading protocols.
- Crypto-forward experience, including familiarity with onchain activity such as interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, and engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services
