As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll design scalable systems, mentor engineers, drive technical excellence, and collaborate across teams to deliver impactful software solutions.
Who We Are:
At Buoy Software, we are on a mission to revolutionize the blood collection process through innovative software. Our goal is to empower the industry to better support donors, operate more efficiently, and increase the supply of life-saving, blood product-derived therapies. We have been working alongside Join Parachute, our sister company, in the opening of small market donation centers across the country that will create local donation center careers, opportunities to donate blood products, and provide financial compensation for those donations that will have a positive economic impact in those communities. The need for blood products is growing exponentially and we want to close the gap between supply and demand by empowering organizations with the right tools. Buoy Software is the industry’s answer to unlocking more blood product supply.
What We Do:
We offer a suite of software that enables blood product collection companies to support their donors, collect more product, and optimize operational efficiency all from one place. Think of Buoy’s software as the intuitive, data-driven solution that blood product donation centers didn't know they needed. In an industry that hasn’t seen innovation in more than two decades, Buoy’s software streamlines the donation process allowing our customers to promote loyalty while improving efficiency in a donation center. In turn, the increase in blood product donations improves a supply level that is at an all time low, and allows for blood-product derived biotherapies to continue to evolve and save lives for those who face life-threatening conditions. Buoy Software is excited to be playing more of a role in improving the state of blood products and blood product donations.
Where You Are:
This is a fully remote position open to candidates living in the United States. Buoy is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship, now or in the future.
What You’ll Do:
As a Senior Software Engineer at Buoy, you'll drive technical excellence across our engineering team - from architecting scalable systems to mentoring engineers and shaping our engineering culture. You'll work closely with product and design partners to build high-impact solutions that advance Buoy's mission. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a collaborative, remote-first environment and is passionate about both technical craft and team growth. Specifically, you will:
- Design scalable, maintainable systems aligned with best practices; make and communicate high-level technical decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term goals
- Write, review, and maintain production-grade code; champion coding standards; troubleshoot complex issues across environments; monitor and optimize system performance
- Guide junior and mid-level engineers; lead projects from planning through deployment; foster a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence
- Partner with product, design, and engineering to define requirements and deliver solutions; communicate technical concepts effectively to all stakeholders; build strong cross-team relationships
- Take full ownership of features from conception to production; break down complex problems; manage risks and proactively escalate when needed; ensure high availability, security, and reliability
- Stay current on industry trends; evaluate and recommend new technologies; conduct thorough code reviews; lead refactoring and tech debt reduction efforts; maintain comprehensive technical documentation
Who You Are:
You thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment where quality and teamwork go hand in hand. You work fluidly across disciplines, partnering with product, design, and engineering because you see collaboration not as a disruption, but as a key part of how great products are built. You listen actively, navigate differing perspectives with empathy, and keep work moving forward with a shared sense of purpose.
- You’re adaptable and steady in the face of change. When priorities shift (as they often do in a startup), you adjust course quickly without losing momentum or clarity.
- You’re resourceful and solution-oriented. When you hit a roadblock, your first instinct is to dig in and figure it out - whether that means reading documentation, trying things out, or reaching out to someone who can help.
- You operate with a strong sense of ownership. You can take a goal and run with it, breaking down the work, setting deadlines, and driving toward outcomes. You know when to collaborate, when to ask for input, and when to make a call and move forward.
- You bring a bias toward action, paired with a learning mindset. You work quickly and thoughtfully, and you don’t let perfectionism slow you down. When you make a mistake or uncover a knowledge gap, you treat it as a chance to learn and improve.
What You’ll Bring:
- Technical Foundation: 3-6+ years building production web applications with experience in Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL or similar modern stack. We are moving toward a modern, simplified stack using Hotwire (Turbo/Stimulus); while experience with TypeScript or React is a plus, we value full stack skills with strong fundamentals in system design, architecture, and scalable solutions
- Engineering Craft & Leadership: You view software engineering as a craft - balancing code quality with pragmatic delivery; proven track record leading projects or small teams; experience mentoring engineers and elevating team capabilities through code reviews and knowledge sharing
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; can explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences; experienced in cross-functional collaboration with product and design teams; comfortable working autonomously while also pairing with teammates when beneficial
- Work Style & Values: High empathy for teammates and users - you consider their needs in every decision; proactive problem solver who identifies issues before they escalate; strategic thinker who balances immediate impact with long-term technical health; thrives in a fully distributed, remote-first environment with async communication
- Technical Depth: Strong grasp of performance optimization, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and modern development practices; stays current with industry trends and brings innovative ideas to the team
What We Offer:
At Buoy Software, we’re a team of curious, mission-driven people who care deeply about building software that makes a real difference - and about building a company we’re proud to be part of. We know that doing great work starts with feeling supported, valued, and empowered, both personally and professionally.
Our benefits are designed to help you do your best work and live a full life outside of it. We offer comprehensive health plans, a 401k program, generous parental leave, a flexible time off policy, and a home office stipend to support your remote work setup. We also invest in creating a connected, collaborative remote culture and thoughtful onboarding to help new hires feel welcomed and set up for success.
We believe diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences make our work stronger. Buoy Software is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer, and we’re committed to building a culture of inclusion and belonging. We welcome applicants from all walks of life and are dedicated to ensuring every team member feels respected, supported, and able to thrive.
The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check, employment verification, and provide references.
