Bonterra exists to propel every doer of good to their peak impact. We measure that impact against our vision to increase the giving rate as a percentage of GDP from 2% to 3% by 2033. We know that this goal is lofty, but we are confident that the right technology and expertise will strengthen trust in the sector, allowing the social good industry to accelerate growth and reach peak impact. Bonterra's differentiated, end-to-end solutions collectively support a unique network of over 20,000 customers, including over 16,000 nonprofit organizations and over 50 percent of Fortune 100 companies. As a Senior Software Architect, you’ll drive design and implementation of our cloud-based, agentic software systems. This role is both deeply hands-on and highly strategic: you will write and review code, design critical infrastructure, and lead architectural decisions that shape the future of our technology. You’ll guide our transition of existing systems to AWS while architecting new solutions purpose-built for the cloud. Your leadership will directly impact how we scale our systems and accelerate delivery. Finally, working in close partnership with the Chief Architect, you will help define and drive Bonterra’s technical strategy across the company, leading from the front by being deeply hands-on with our most ambitious and transformative work. As we move from traditional SaaS to AI-first, agentic platforms, your leadership will shape not just what we build, but how we think, architect, and deliver breakthrough experiences for the social good sector.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design of durable, scalable product architectures that will support Bonterra’s solutions for the next 5–10 years.

  • Author and review specifications that drive alignment across Product and Engineering, and ensure architectural integrity across platforms.

  • Serve as the escalation point for difficult architectural and design issues - coaching and mentoring engineers on design tradeoffs and system choices.

  • Code yourself - with AI of course - on Bonterra’s most strategic and experimental initiatives, setting the bar for how we build.

  • Perform technical due diligence on acquisition targets to inform investment decisions and integration.

  • Conduct technical teardowns of existing products to uncover architectural risks, identify opportunities, and shape long-term strategy.

  • Integrate AI tools and LLMs into the software development lifecycle, streamlining architecture design and review, code quality assurance, and overall productivity acceleration.

  • Lead the integration of LLMs and autonomous agents into core product functionality, transforming traditional workflows into intelligent, self-operating experiences.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to translate our AI-first vision into an executable roadmap that evolves both our product offerings and internal engineering processes.

Who You Are

You are a seasoned technologist with deep architecture experience and a passion for applying emerging technologies to meaningful challenges. You know how to code yourself and can dig into large codebases. You’re driven by clarity and simplicity in complex systems. You have the rare ability to zoom out and see the big picture while also diving deep into the low-level technical details needed to get there. You know how to make hard tradeoffs between speed and technical perfection, always grounded in what will deliver the most business value. You write and speak with precision, and you are always seeking the next transformative idea that will shape your craft and team. Finally, and most importantly, you know how to ship!

  • 10+ years of experience building and delivering software products, including 5+ years making final architectural decisions on major software projects.

  • Strong command of software design patterns, systems architecture, distributed systems, and cloud-native platforms (especially AWS).

  • Proven experience integrating Generative AI into product or development pipelines using tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or custom prompt-engineered solutions.

  • Strong analytical thinking, writing, and communication skills; able to synthesize abstract technical ideas into clear roadmaps and specs.

  • Curious and strategic mindset—eager to lead R&D, evaluate new tools, and help shape Bonterra’s long-term tech direction.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field strongly preferred.

  • You thrive at the intersection of strategy and execution. You don’t just define the blueprint, you roll up your sleeves to build the first version and set the standard.

  • You bring a builder’s mindset to emerging technologies and understand how to apply AI not only as a tool, but as a transformational capability.
