Job Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Scientist with expertise in space-based radio occultation and surface reflection measurements and applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, coupled with extensive practical knowledge spanning 10-20 years in the application of GNSS radio occultation and reflection data for weather forecasting and related atmospheric and geophysical research and applications.

About PlanetiQ

PlanetiQ is a privately owned space-tech company providing the highest-quality GNSS radio occultation (RO) data from our own satellite constellation. Our data powers accurate weather and climate forecasts and helps protect communities from severe weather. Founded in 2015, we serve government, defense, and industry leaders worldwide, and in 2025 were awarded NOAA NESDIS’s largest ever, $24.3 weather satellite data contract. We are known for solving tough problems, building groundbreaking technology, and setting the standard for precision and reliability in atmospheric monitoring.

Role

  • Lead and manage scientific research initiatives focused on advancing the understanding and application of radio occultation and reflection data.
  • Develop algorithms and methodologies to optimize the use of radio occultation and reflection measurements for estimating the atmospheric and surface state and forecasting weather and climate.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to enhance satellite instrumentation and data processing techniques.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior scientists, researchers and engineers within the organization.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences to contribute to the field’s knowledge base.
  • Engage with external stakeholders including government agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners to promote the adoption and utilization of radio occultation and reflection technology.
  • Participate in writing proposals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 10-20 years of progressive experience in conducting research involving space-based radio occultation and reflection measurements.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the application of radio occultation and reflection data for weather forecasting and atmospheric research.
  • Proven track record of leading scientific projects and managing research teams.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++, FORTRAN) for data analysis and algorithm development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with remote sensing, satellite instrumentation and data acquisition systems preferred.
  • Familiarity/experience in AI/ML desired.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience
  • Equity in the form of stock options
  • Annual performance-based bonus
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance with fully-paid premiums
  • 401(k) plan
  • 33 days of PTO per year, including holidays and sick days
  • Relocation reimbursement for qualified roles
  • Opportunity to work with cutting-edge satellite technology and contribute to groundbreaking advancements in atmospheric and geophysical science.
  • Dynamic and inclusive work environment with opportunities for professional growth and development.
