Pay Range

$92,600.00-$127,400.00 Annual

This is the base salary pay range that an applicant can expect to make upon hire.   Pay within this range will vary based upon relevant experience, skills, and education among other factors. In addition, this position is eligible for an incentive bonus. 

The purpose of the Senior Product Engineer is to work within the Bituminous Portfolio providing technical design and testing support for all of JM’s polymer modified bituminous products, roof systems and manufacturing processes.  

POSITION SCOPE: Perform technical evaluations and testing to support the development and use of new and existing bituminous membrane products/systems. Work closely with outside suppliers to improve product performance and address quality issues. Own and maintain all technical documents related to bituminous membrane product line. Provide technical support to assist Product Managers with business needs.

Your Day to Day:

  • Work in laboratory environment to design polymer modified bitumen coating formulations and implement them at the production-scale
  • Understand and learn all tests and methods required for bituminous membrane products and associated ASTM and internal standards
  • Maintain all specifications related to the bituminous membrane products
  • Provide data for supporting literature related to bituminous membrane products
  • Research, test, and document competitive products
  • Work with suppliers to ensure compliance with raw material specifications and requirements
  • Define and execute testing programs for qualification of new materials, systems and accessories to support and grow the profitability of JM’s Roofing Systems business
  • Work with Operations to complete inline manufacturing trials for alternate formulations, new raw materials and new product designs
  • Supply Operations with modified bituminous coating formulations that functionally align with the process and field applications FFU(fitness for use)
  • Construct large-scale test roof assemblies for system performance evaluation and codes alignment
  • Participate in ASTM meetings as well as other industry trade associations as required
  • Answer questions from customers and JM’s internal personnel on all issues related to bituminous membrane performance and testing. When necessary, define and execute testing programs to find solutions
  • Work cross functionally with other engineers, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Product Management and Corporate R&D to understand and support the wider aspects of the business
  • Build and maintain awareness of new manufacturing capabilities and technologies
  • Conduct forensic testing in support of roofing systems material quality and performance issues
  • Spend time in the field on roofs to understand the real issues and opportunities associated with Commercial/Industrial roof systems and installation
  • Generate valuable ideas for JM to support new product initiatives and to protect JM’s intellectual property

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Bachelors of Science degree (Engineering, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemistry or Material Science) and 5 years of related experience
  • Must be an organized, result oriented, and motivated self-starter that conducts hands-on testing and development
  • Ability to translate complex technical needs into robust products
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently with strong project management skills
  • Strong technical skills in data gathering, statistical and engineering analysis and evaluation
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to work in a production environment during trials
  • Ability to execute on deliverables
  • Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams
  • Ability and willingness to work hands-on to solve equipment and mechanical issues
  • Supervises/Leads individuals or a project team to achieve milestones and objectives by setting priorities and providing direction. May provide performance feedback.
  • Work environment is typical of a research and development facility; during plant trials may be exposed to environmental conditions of cold, heat, high noise levels, moving mechanical parts, heights, dust/mist/gas/fumes, extensive walking or climbing, etc.
  • Ability to be on your feet for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to lift, carry, push or pull up to and including 50 pounds.
  • Heavy travel required 25-50% (25% typical up to 75% possible during key project implementation)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of polymer modified bitumen chemistry is preferred with focus on SBS and APP polymer modifications of bitumen
  • Knowledge of membrane manufacturing processes, experience is preferred
