About the teamThe Zillow Group Legal and Compliance Department is a dedicated team of skilled (and fun!) legal professionals who enjoy working in a collegial environment within an innovative, fast-paced tech, real estate, and media company. This role is part of the Business Lines Legal Team, which provides the frontline support for Zillow’s products and services.

About the role

We are looking for an outstanding product attorney to provide legal support to our StreetEasy and New Construction business lines. 

StreetEasy is Zillow’s New York brand and is the go-to portal for New Yorkers looking to buy, sell, and rent in New York City. Supporting this beloved brand requires handling a broad range of legal matters, with a focus on real estate portal legal compliance, New York City brokerage operations, real estate rules and regulations, marketing, AI, promotions, and general product support.  

Zillow’s New Construction business provides comprehensive advertising products for many of the largest and most innovative homebuilders in the country. Using our cutting edge products, builders can showcase their inventory to the largest online audience of home shoppers, ensuring buyers have access to this unique and coveted inventory. As the primary legal point of contact for this business, this role supports a broad range of matters, with a focus on product development, software and data licensing, AI, marketing and claim substantiation, trust and safety, and general product support.

Just as important as providing quick and accurate legal advice will be this attorney’s ability to identify, engage, and collaborate with stakeholders within Legal and Compliance and other shared services. Supporting StreetEasy and New Construction requires a willingness to learn new areas of law while also understanding when to leverage subject matter experts. Above all, this attorney should have demonstrated expertise in supporting the development and launch of real estate tech products, offering creative solutions to complex problems, and excelling at building strong relationships with both clients and colleagues.

You Will Get To:
  • Serve as legal point of contact and subject matter expert for our StreetEasy and New Construction business lines. Support includes all aspects of the product development lifecycle, including product design and copy, marketing collateral, vendor / partner contracts, customer service scripts / escalations, data use & privacy implications, and disclosures and terms of use

  • Embed yourself with business partners and provide tactical and pragmatic legal counsel for special projects, pilot programs, and other key initiatives that are central to our strategy

  • Proactively partner with cross-functional business teams and shared services (e.g., privacy, fair housing, finance, compliance industry, licensing, communications, and marketing) to identify and resolve novel legal matters that arise during the product development lifecycle

  • Analyze proposed and enacted legislative changes that impact assigned products and work with government relations and product teams to develop and execute implementation plans 

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including for key strategic partnerships  

  • Collaborate closely with other internal partners, including other product attorneys, privacy, finance, tax, risk management and information security and compliance

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $160,900.00 - $257,100.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations. In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont the standard base pay range for this role is $152,900.00 - $244,300.00 annually. The base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside.

Who you are

You are a highly responsive and trusted advisor that has:

  • 7+ years of relevant experience with a national or regional law firm or in-house legal department, preferably at a tech company

  • A JD with active state bar admission

  • Experience with licensing, marketing, intellectual property, and commercial agreements 

  • Experience with real estate regulatory frameworks, the New York real estate market, and the national builder landscape preferred

  • Aptitude for innovative and goal-oriented problem solving

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with ability to persuasively advise on the implications of legal issues and risk

  • Outstanding attention to detail, a proactive work ethic, and top-notch drafting and negotiation skills

  • A project-manager approach to ownership of projects and the ability to quickly get things done by creating clarity from ambiguity

  • A team-first attitude with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and levels to develop consumer-centric, leading-edge solutions
