Overview of Role
ZwitterCo is seeking an experienced Senior Process Engineer to join our team. This role will be a key contributor in ensuring the successful, high-impact application of ZwitterCo’s cutting-edge membranes across various industries with an emphasis on water and wastewater applications.
The candidate will play both an internal- and external-facing role and serve as a subject matter expert on the implementation and integration of ZwitterCo membranes into larger industrial process and wastewater operations, with a main focus on food contact membrane processes, especially in the dairy industry. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in crossflow (tangential flow) filtration system design, including spiral wound reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration; membrane process integration within larger food and beverage manufacturing plants, with a main focus around dairy processes. This position will provide site support by visiting customers and ensuring they are getting the most out of the ZwitterCo products.
Key to this role is the ability to work across functions in a fast-paced dynamic environment. Successful candidates will be highly motivated and able to self-manage work effort allocated to different priorities without losing track of less urgent projects. Candidates should be passionate about membrane technology and eager to work on the cutting edge, supporting customers in gaining value from our products.
About ZwitterCo
ZwitterCo has developed a breakthrough in materials science - a new class of zwitterionic membranes with unprecedented fouling resistance. Our membrane solutions perform beyond the limits of traditional filtration, making it practical to treat complex wastewater, purify water for reuse, and maximize efficiency in food processing applications.
ZwitterCo serves customers in more than 20 countries across food and beverage, agricultural, and industrial sectors. We are rapidly investing in our technology, equipment, and global services platform to help our industrial customers achieve their most ambitious sustainability and growth targets.
We are grateful to have been named as Fast Company’s Top Innovators of 2024 and featured on the 2025 & 2026 Global Cleantech 100.
Responsibilities include:
- Serve as an internal and customer-facing subject matter expert for ZwitterCo products, with emphasis on the sanitary (Evolution) product lines
- Partner with the sales team in the customer discovery process and evaluate commercial opportunities for technical feasibility and risk
- Provide post-sales technical support for partners and end users to ensure customer success. This includes customer site visits to check on product performance, process troubleshooting, and data collection
- Monitor and collect customer installation data to optimize performance and develop case study reports
- Develop process and system design guidelines specific for sanitary applications, working closely with the internal engineering team and external integration/fabrication partners (specifically for the dairy industry) for spiral-wound membrane products
- Provide leadership in the development of our internal knowledgebase through assimilation of existing research and planning internal studies to gather product performance data
- Provide test plan leadership for pilot, demonstration and feasibility studies, collaborating with the Field engineering group and the Sales team
- Lead in-person and online technical trainings for OEM engineers and/or end users
- Evaluate, mitigate, and communicate technical risks associated with new applications, projects, and/or partners
- Author technical guidance documents and give oral/written presentations to customers, industry partners, and ZwitterCo business leaders as needed
- Provide mentorship to less experienced members of the process engineering team
Qualifications
- A university degree in an engineering discipline is required unless the candidate has extensive previous work experience in a comparable role. A degree in chemical or environmental engineering is preferred, while a degree in mechanical or industrial engineering is also suitable.
- 6+ years of experience supporting sanitary crossflow membrane systems in an applications or process engineering role is required
- Subject matter expertise in at least one of the following fields:
- Design and operation of a dairy processing facility
- Design and operation of industrial water treatment with spiral UF membranes
- Design and operation of food process membrane systems (sanitary RO/NF/UF)
- Broad and detailed working knowledge of non-membrane process technologies, such as particulate filtration, evaporation/drying, etc.
- High level understanding of process flows in a dairy processing plant
- Expertise in fluid dynamic principles, especially with membrane processes
- Knowledge of spiral element autopsy processes is an added benefit
- Familiarity with current product lines for RO/NF/UF membranes common in the sanitary market
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Comfort with public speaking (hosting training, webinars, etc) is required
Schedule, Travel, Compensation, and Location
This full-time position will be a remote position located in the US. The ideal candidate will be located in the Midwest, with easy access to a major regional airport and will require site visits with travel by car. This position will report to the Process Engineering Manager.
Travel for this role is expected to be 30-50%, mainly consisting of customer success site visits and conferences. Most travel is expected to be short (2-4 nights away).
Compensation will be commensurate with experience and include equity and benefits.
