Our mission is simple: End Cyber Risk. We’re looking for a Senior Principal Threat Intelligence Researcher to be part of making that happen.  

About the Role: 

In this Senior Principal Threat Intelligence Researcher role, you will be responsible for technically leading the threat intelligence research team as part of the Security Intelligence and Analytics organization under Arctic Wolf Labs. This includes establishing intelligence research methodologies, threat research processes, and the extraction of actionable technical intelligence from various open and closed sources for the protection of our customers and the benefit of our threat prevention/detection/response platforms. You will work closely with our MR and MDR product R&D teams as a senior subject matter expert to ensure our detection development benefits from understanding the most current threat actor TTPs. You will also work with S2 (our SecOps organization) on providing timely research materials that can be used in the development of tailored threat briefings and cyber defensive guidance for our customer base. Lastly you will establish and lead technical collaboration with other private and public security threat intelligence organizations for joint analysis of emerging threats that are applicable to the customer base of Arctic Wolf.

You will be responsible for defining, implementing, and driving the adoption of threat driven design in our product lines and services. You will also ensure our global sensor and security event data collection platforms are architected to acquire novel threats and data that can be used for furthering our threat intelligence research practice. Together with the Director of Security Intelligence and Analytics you will establish KPIs for our threat intelligence research function and capabilities. The scope of the role includes ensuring the development of the technical threat intelligence research roadmap, being involved in the hiring of talent, and the mentoring of other team members for their growth in the field. 

As our ideal candidate you have a strong senior security background that has involved encountering/responding to real threat actor activities with high degrees of sophistication. You have been involved in the technical analysis of threat actor TTPs/methods and malicious tooling and have recent experience in threat intelligence research/analysis as a leader or senior technical SME.

 Responsibilities: 

  • Technically lead the Threat Intelligence Research R&D team. Helping them build the practice through all the analysis methods, tooling, and components necessary to deliver this internal service to all stakeholders
  • Leverage a threat intelligence platform (TIP) on a daily basis to centralize all new collected threat intelligence
  • Work closely with security researchers and developers across our product line to create the best of breed detection and analysis capabilities needed in our service delivery and product development 
  • Deliver regular threat briefing presentations to internal stakeholders on topics ranging from threat actor campaign activity, novel TTPs, and emerging malware or exploits
  • Collaborate with product management, S2, and other R&D technical leaders from other teams to enable threat informed designs and decision making
  • Regularly collaborate with our Marketing and PR group to generate public facing threat research and thought leadership content through blogs, white papers, webinars, and delivery of conference presentations
  • Instill best practices for threat intelligence research and documentation, assure work meet requirements, and deliver high-quality work on tight schedules 
  • Oversee the full threat intelligence research and analysis lifecycle 
  • Clearly articulate threat intelligence research to a vast set of internal stakeholders 
  • Technically coach teams through the process of planning, navigating trade-offs, stakeholder management and driving timely resolutions 
  • Lead by example. Instill the Arctic Wolf Development Principles by living them on a daily basis 
  • Work with the Director of Security Intelligence & Analytics to ensure teams are highly motivated, performing well, and delivering work on time 
  • Work with the Director of Security Intelligence to make sure each team is clear on the technical objectives and goals they are striving to achieve 

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • Experience in security leadership roles and/or technically leading and building threat intelligence teams and practices
  • Deep subject matter expertise in Threat Intelligence, Vulnerability Analysis, Malware/Malicious Tool Analysis
  • Advanced proficiency in the MITRE ATT&CK framework and associated depth of analysis for each TTP and threat actor represented in this body of knowledge
  • Advanced proficiency in quickly extracting technically relevant threat intelligence from various sources and apply that to detection/response methods in various security technologies/products
  • Deep understanding of threat protection/detection tooling/stacks used for endpoint, network, and cloud: SIEM, TIP, SOAR, NGFW/NIPS/NIDS/NSM, UEBA/Security Analytics, XDR/EDR
  • Understanding of Security Posture Management and Vulnerability Analysis/Management Tools for Network, Endpoint, and Cloud
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of technical education and work experience. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to deliver rationale for design decisions 
  • Resourceful self-starter with a positive, can-do attitude 
  • High EQ and sense of empathy 
  • Experience with modern development methodologies (Agile, Kanban, XP, etc.) 
  • Demonstrated technical project management skills
