Senior Power System Studies Engineer - Data Driven techniques (AI/ML)
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking a highly motivated Senior Project Engineer – Studies to join our Power Systems team with a focus on AI and advanced optimization techniques. This role is ideal for candidates with a PhD or Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, and a strong background in power system analysis, modeling, and control. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with tools such as PSSE, DigSILENT, MATLAB, PSCAD, or RTDS, and a passion for applying machine learning, data-driven methods, and optimization algorithms to solve real-world grid challenges. This position involves working on global projects and may require up to 25% travel.
As a Senior Power System Studies Engineer, a typical day might include the following:
Developing and applying machine learning and deep learning models for grid forecasting, control, and predictive maintenance.
Implementing reinforcement learning techniques for real-time grid operations and decision-making.
Conducting data-driven power system analysis using time-series and spatiotemporal data.
Performing steady-state and dynamic simulations to evaluate system stability and performance.
Designing and executing Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) setups to validate control systems and protection schemes.
Applying linear and nonlinear optimization techniques to solve power flow and energy management problems.
Utilizing advanced mathematical tools such as Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy), and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) for system identification and model reduction.
Assessing the feasibility and impact of integrating renewable energy sources into existing grids.
Analyzing test results to identify and resolve potential issues before field deployment.
Staying current with the latest advancements in AI, optimization, and power system technologies.
Ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
Mentoring and supporting the development of junior engineers.
This job might be for you if:
You have a deep understanding of electric power system optimization, control, and dynamics.
You are experienced in AI/ML applications in power systems, including forecasting, anomaly detection, and control.
You are proficient in simulation and modeling tools such as PSSE, DigSILENT, MATLAB, PSCAD, or RTDS.
You are familiar with HIL testing environments and control validation techniques.
You are comfortable working with advanced mathematical and system identification techniques.
You are excited about applying data-driven and model-based optimization to real-world grid challenges.
You are willing to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% based on project needs.

Pay Range Data
We anticipate filling this position as a Senior Engineer $100,900.00 - $168,100.00. We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the pay range may differ if filled at a different level. Our pay ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
