Job Description:Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Senior Photo Editor for WSJ. Magazine and  Style News coverage (which includes the Entertainment, Fashion & Lifestyle, and Culture bureaus). WSJ. Magazine and Style News blend deep reporting, intelligent wit and good taste to create compulsively readable stories, analysis and features on the subjects of style, entertainment, celebrity, society, lifestyle and the arts. Photographically, style and magazine content at The Journal takes many forms—reported articles, celebrity profiles, photo essays, fashion editorials, social media, events and more. We are looking for a photo editor with both a stylish sensibility and journalistic integrity who brings an interest and background in style and cultural features assigning and production.

You must also have a digital, deadline-driven background and be able to work quickly and accurately on a range of subjects, collaborating with the relevant bureau editors and reporters as well as non-staff writers and contributors. You should have experience with contemporary portraiture, reportage, conceptual still-life and have deep, expedient research skills.

You will:

  • Oversee multi-pronged visual projects – whether putting together a complex fashion shoot with talent & models, or leading a photo-research project over the course of several weeks.

  • Work closely with a team of WSJ. Magazine and Style News photo editors, WSJ newsroom photo editors, and our platform teams.

  • Produce, pull and build visual assets for Style News content for the needs of all digital platforms.

  • Lead and support all phases of photo shoot production, from concept through final delivery, liaising closely with our Photography Director.

  • Manage multiple intricate photoshoots while also coordinating image deliverables between a network of newspaper, magazine and digital teams.

  • Pitch visually innovative and original approaches to coverage, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.

  • Think in fresh, catchy and witty ways about how to best visually represent columns and analysis, with an eye to social engagement.

  • Meticulously maintain a budget on a monthly basis. Professionally represent Journal interests and negotiate rates with relevant contractors and third-parties.

You have:

  • At least 6 to 8 years experience in a photo-editing role.

  • An extensive background in editorial production work, conceptualization and assigning of visual content.

  • Excellent news judgment, fast digital editing skills and an expansive understanding of mobile-first experience and design.

  • Strong industry relationships with photographers, photo agents, stylists, set designers and other creative collaborators.

  • Deep research skills, including newsgathering and social media tools.

  • Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities.

  • A creative vision and enthusiasm to spearhead and collaborate on new ideas.

  • The drive to reach new audiences, an understanding of and appreciation for audience data and SEO-friendly presentation.

  • Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and all social media platforms.

  • The ability to be a self-starter who works well with larger teams.

You will report to the Photo Director of WSJ. Magazine and Style News. This full-time position is based in our New York office.

To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and a link to a portfolio of your past photo-editing or producing work.
