Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for NASA’s Artemis mission to lead the design and development of clean sheet motors for various water, coolant and propellant pump systems. The successful candidate will have designed, manufactured, and tested multiple electrically driven motors for various industrial or space applications

Bring your technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

As the mechanical design engineer, you will play a pivotal technical role in the design, analysis, and integration of high-performance cryogenic pumps within our thermal and fluids organization. You will be responsible for leading electromagnetic design, thermal management strategies, and comprehensive performance analyses tailored for cryogenic environments.

In this position, you will collaborate closely with internal teams and external suppliers to source and qualify components that meet rigorous manufacturability and reliability standards for spaceflight applications. Your expertise will drive the development, manufacturing, testing and certification of our cryogenic pumps, ensuring robust analytical and physical validation throughout the product lifecycle. Working at Blue Origin, you will have the opportunity to contribute directly to our mission of enabling humanity’s expansion into space by developing innovative propulsion technologies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience designing turbomachinery components
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD design (Creo preferred) and PLM systems, including BOM structuring and engineering change management for innovative component development
  • Strong foundation in mechanical engineering—expert in materials, heat treatments, statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials for mission-critical applications
  • Skilled in GD&T and tolerance stack analysis, ensuring precision and reliability under demanding operational conditions
  • Hands-on expertise in integration, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of electric motors—seeing designs through from concept to deployment

Desired:

  • Cryogenic motor experience
  • 7+ years of experience leading validation efforts in automotive or high-power product field
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline

Responsibilities:

  • Design mechanical components of electric cryogenic pumps to support lunar landers
  • Iterate pump designs to optimize performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Lead engineering activities related to CAD design and optimization (including design for excellence)
  • Guide product life cycle development, from product definition and analysis through manufacturing, assembly, testing, verification, integration, and flight.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and teams to evolve designs from concept through prototyping to mass production, supporting hands-on prototype assembly and component fabrication.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and maintain effective professional relationships in a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
