We seek a Senior Manager, Software Engineering to lead the teams responsible for BigCommerce’s storefront experience. In this role, you’ll be responsible for the end-user experience of both Stencil, our battle-tested theme engine, and Catalyst, our next-generation storefront powered by Next.js and BigCommerce’s headless GraphQL API.
This role is for someone that thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about empowering engineers to do the best work in their careers. You’ll need to balance shipping an ambitious roadmap, improving the stability and performance of mission critical systems that power billions of dollars in commerce transactions, and mentoring and coaching engineers and leaders.

We have a preference for candidates located in Austin, TX or Atlanta, GA.
What You’ll Do:Lead and develop two teams, including coaching, performance management, career growth, and hiring.
Drive the technical roadmap for BigCommerce’s storefront experiences.
Establish a culture of strong ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Improve quality across performance, reliability, observability, scalability, and security.
Partner with Product to deliver excellent merchant and developer experiences across both Stencil and Catalyst.
Lead Stencil modernization efforts: evolving the framework’s rendering pipeline, improving existing themes and creating new ones, and modernizing the visual editing experience by integrating Makeswift.
Lead Catalyst’s continued growth: expand its core feature set, implement new capabilities in B2B commerce, and deliver a new hosting product.
Establish team objectives aligned with business goals and ensure the team executes against them.
Facilitate regular 1:1s, healthy feedback cycles, and engineering rituals (e.g., design reviews, knowledge sharing, retros, etc.).
Participate in on-call and be responsible for incident management.
5–7+ years of experience in building and operating production systems, comfortable with front-end, back-end, and infrastructure.
2+ years of experience managing & retaining high-performing software engineering teams.
Strong technical background with an ability to lead technical strategy and architectural discussions.
A pragmatic approach to execution: you think iteratively and break down problems into deliverable slices.
Comfortable operating across multiple codebases and teams.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with Next.js and modern web architecture (e.g., edge computing, web performance, etc.)
Experience with GraphQL and API platforms.
Familiarity with ecommerce platforms.
Experience supporting ecosystems like app or theme marketplaces and partner integrations.
The position can be fully remote but there is a preference for on-site/hybrid in Austin, TX or Atlanta, GA.

The exact salary will be dependent on the successful candidate’s location, relevant knowledge, skills, and qualifications.
