The Role
Block is organized into business groups, each with dedicated product and engineering teams. Our team plays a vital role in supporting these groups by delivering AI-powered solutions that directly benefit our customers and drive business growth. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Machine Learning Manager to lead our team in building the next generation of AI products. You will work on cutting-edge agentic products for Square and Cash App customers. These products are among the highest priority at Block today and have direct leadership visibility. We expect them to shape the future of the company.

You Will

• Drive the execution and delivery of new AI-powered product experiences, ensuring your team has the context and support to build impactful solutions.
• Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to understand business needs, identify opportunities and help to ideate on the future of AI solutions for customers.
• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of machine learning engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and engineering excellence.
• Set the technical vision and strategy for the team, defining the roadmap for developing scalable AI solutions
• Drive alignment with Block's AI strategy by representing your team to senior leadership and acting as an expert on applying cutting-edge AI.
• Promote the adoption of AI best practices across the company by empowering your team to provide guidance and share their expertise.

You Have

• 12+ years of experience in machine learning or software engineering, with 5+ years in a people management role, leading a team of engineers.
• Proven experience shipping customer-facing ML products, with a deep understanding of the end-to-end ML lifecycle from data gathering and training to MLOps and production deployment.
• Extraordinary communication skills (verbal and written), with the ability to articulate a technical vision and strategy to both senior leadership and individual contributors.
• Deep understanding of modern ML techniques (e.g., Large Language Models) and the ability to guide a team through complex technical decisions.
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills with a passion for developing talent and building inclusive, high-performing teams.
• A desire to understand our clients' needs in order to shape the strategy and vision for tools and systems that solve customer problems.
• Experience leading teams to produce production-quality code and services, with a track record of setting high standards for testing, evaluation, and monitoring.
• Experience using any of the major cloud vendors for high-scale production use cases.

The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
