As an integral part of the program, the Senior Machine Learning Engineer leads the team in evaluating new or emerging technologies using prototypes and/or proof of concepts, analyzes and communicates the benefits and risks in implementing solutions using the new technologies, and leads teams to support the adoption of new technologies across the enterprise. The Senior Machine Learning Engineer will also provide technical leadership by supervising and mentoring junior IT specialists.

Responsibilities
- Lead evaluation of new or emerging technologies through prototypes and proofs of concept
- Analyze and clearly communicate the benefits and risks of adopting new technologies
- Serve as a hands-on technical lead across development, operations, and security in cloud environments
- Guide enterprise-wide adoption of modern tools, cloud platforms, and AI/ML solutions
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior IT specialists and engineers
- Balance hands-on engineering with strategic architectural planning and system design
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering or IT
- Proficiency in Python and experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Experience deploying, tuning, and maintaining ML models in production (MLOps)
- Experience with Amazon SageMaker
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure); deep AWS experience strongly preferred
- Strong DevOps skills: CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (CDK or Terraform), automation, and monitoring
- Full-stack development experience:
- Frontend: React, TypeScript
- Backend: Python, Pandas, Scikit-learn
- Data: PostgreSQL, S3,
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform or AWS CDK
- Strong system architecture skills: designs secure, scalable systems with attention to both detail and big-picture strategy
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new projects and technologies
Nice to Have
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or Associate
- Experience managing technical teams and mentoring engineers
- Prior work in government or civic tech environments
- Strong references from past roles. Particularly important if there’s a history of short tenures
- Personable, collaborative, and thrives in fast-paced, evolving environments
Salary Information
We are committed to offering a competitive salary for this position, with an estimated range of $140k to $170k annually. Please note that this range is intended to provide a general idea of what to expect. The final offer may vary based on experience, skills, and other factors.
