Innovation at its Best: Join our Forward-Thinking Company

At CableLabs we wake up every day to invent the future. CableLabs is a global, award-winning innovation and R&D lab dedicated to keeping people connected by building and orchestrating emergent technology and igniting co-innovation today for the broadband of tomorrow.

The Senior Linux Engineer position is part of the Information Technologies department at CableLabs. The department is responsible for delivering technology services across the organization and overseeing the IT systems, solutions, and resources purchased or developed by the company. Our team plays a critical role in providing reliable, timely, and consistent services while maintaining a strong focus on security.

Why This Role Is Exciting

The position is ideal for an individual who is experienced in implementing and managing several aspects of datacenter infrastructure. The Senior Linux Engineer is responsible for designing, maintaining, securing, and improving CableLabs’ Linux-based infrastructure across physical, virtual, and cloud-connected environments, providing technical leadership for systems operations, automation, monitoring, vulnerability remediation, and platform reliability. The role is expected to operate independently, support complex production environments, mentor other IT team members, and drive continuous improvement through automation, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration.

You will work closely with the rest of the IT team to establish standards and consistency to help provide the services necessary for not only the CableLabs business partners but for the research and testing teams as well.

What You’ll Do:

  • Architect, deploy, maintain, and support Linux-based infrastructure across bare-metal, virtual, lab, and cloud-connected environments, keeping it reliable, secure, patched, monitored, and performant.
  • Design and enforce Linux hardening standards and security policies; manage vulnerability response (Tenable/Nessus, CVE remediation) and develop infrastructure-as-code and automation (Terraform, Ansible) to reduce manual effort and improve reliability.
  • Manage and maintain critical Linux-hosted platforms, including GitLab, LibreNMS, Nagios, and Splunk-related components, keeping them at current security release levels with minimal operational impact.
  • Design and improve IT monitoring and alerting across systems, storage, services, and SSL certificates; respond to incidents, troubleshoot root causes, and document fixes to prevent recurrence.
  • Prioritize and complete Linux-related tickets, maintenance, patching, and lifecycle activities.
  • Provide Linux technical guidance and mentorship to IT team members and lab or engineering users; maintain documentation, SOPs, and knowledge-transfer materials, and support relevant license and contract renewals.
  • Collaborate with development, security, infrastructure, lab, and operations teams to reduce operational risk and support CableLabs initiatives; evaluate and introduce new Linux technologies where appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

What Is a Must Have:

  • 4+ years of hands-on Linux systems engineering experience in production, enterprise, lab, or mission-critical environments, with a strong knowledge of common Linux distributions.
  • Hands-on experience with on premise virtualization systems (Vmware, QEMU/KVM). Demonstrated experience with cloud platform deployment and maintenance of Linux systems.
  • Demonstrated experience administering, patching, securing, and troubleshooting Linux servers at scale, with vulnerability management and solid networking fundamentals.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills, with experience in infrastructure-as-code, source control, and monitoring/alerting tools.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple systems or projects simultaneously.

What Will Set You Apart:

  • Strong knowledge of a major Linux distribution and enterprise licensing and vendor coordination.
  • Knowledge and experience with IEEE802.3 (ethernet), 802.1Q (bridging/lvan) and TCP/IP. Both IPv4 and IPv6 addressing concepts, subnetting, routing and firewall filtering.
  • Experience with configuration management and infrastructure-as-code, virtualization, and containerization.
  • Experience with backup and recovery platforms, cloud platforms, and CI/CD or DevOps practices.
  • Experience developing monitoring and reporting automation, supporting SSL certificate lifecycle, lab or research-oriented infrastructure, and disaster recovery planning.
  • 7+ years of Linux systems engineering experience, including prior senior or lead-level responsibility, is a plus.
  • Strong technical judgment and ownership mindset, balancing day-to-day operational support with long-term improvements in reliability, security, and automation.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to mentor peers, drive technical decisions across teams, and manage competing priorities.
