Here’s the scoop - Summary

The Senior Legal Specialist will report to the global Associate General Counsel – Champion Petfoods. The Senior Legal Specialist will serve as an integral part of the global Champion Petfoods Legal Team, with a significant focus on the U.S., and will be required to identify legal, policy, procedural or other issues related to his/her area of expertise and either resolve them successfully or bring them to the attention of the appropriate attorney.  They will also assist with efficient and effective work procedures and processes and work directly with business partners across the organization on behalf of the Legal Team.

What a typical day looks like

  • Draft, review and revise various contracts and other legal materials, including: Non-Disclosure Agreements, Partner and Vendor Agreements, Sales and Purchase Agreements, brand marketing materials, promotional, contest, and sweepstakes rules and terms and conditions and logistics agreements, among others, while working under supervision of an attorney;
  • Further develop and update the Legal SharePoint Business Self-Service site, including managing the repository of contract templates and assisting in creating and updating new templates as needed.
  • Maintain corporate records and approvals in Blueprint for the affiliated companies and maintain; document controls, retention and implement standardized processes;
  • Coordinate the third-party due diligence process in partnership with Mars Compliance;
  • Prepare and review documentation for litigation and disputes; assist attorneys with information gathering and interviewing internal associates on various subject matters; maintain records of active pre- and active litigation matters and results;
  • Conduct legal research on corporate, sales, advertising, employment, charitable organization contractual matters, and statutory/regulatory developments;
  • Interact with outside counsel in connection with litigation including discovery issues, document recovery, and litigation status;
  • Draft, review and revise legal presentations, training materials, and other legal documents;
  • Respond to calls and email regarding a variety of legal questions and other matters; screen and prioritize phone messages, email and other correspondence;
  • Identify, escalate or resolve routine issues and concerns appropriately; and
  • Provide first-pass review of new labeling artwork and other marketing materials.

What you'll bring

  • A Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • Must have at least 8-10 years of experience as a paralegal in-house or at a major law firm.
  • US paralegal certification strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in the food or consumer product industry preferred. 
  • High-level working knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel and Power Point, Internet research capability.
  • Ability to learn and master additional computerized programs as needed.
  • Willingness to obtain job related continuing education as needed.

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between the range listed above, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, if eligible, including variable pay, medical and dental benefits, participation in 401k plan, and paid time off benefits.  Eligibility for these additional elements depend on the position offered and the employee’s work schedule (i.e., part-time schedule, store associate).  Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an applicant receives an offer of employment.
