The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead one or more of our engineering teams at Root.  In this critical role, you’ll lead a team of 5+ engineers.

Senior Engineering Managers at Root excel at building happy, high-performing teams. They collaborate with the product organization to align the team’s vision and goals to the company’s business objectives. Our managers advocate for a blended product and technology roadmap that solves the team's pain points through technical excellence. They also delegate strategically to support the team members’ growth and ensure engineers play to their strengths. More importantly, our managers lead by example. They have strong ownership over results and lean toward data-driven decision-making.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus to give more flexibility and more choices about how we live and work.

Salary Range: $180,000 - $229,000 (Bonus and LTI Eligible)

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Analytics, and experts in the Insurance group to set the strategy for the quarters to come

  • Effectively manage the individuals on your team to ensure they are performing well in their role and as members of the team

  • Use an appropriate mixture of coaching, directive feedback, and delegation to achieve business, team and individual goals

  • Identify gaps in the team and develop plans to address those gaps via individual development, hiring, or partnership

  • Engage in regular and productive performance conversations as a part of 1:1s and dedicated reviews

  • Continuously evaluate the performance and effectiveness of your team’s process in order to improve outcomes over time

  • Proactively dive into code, design reviews, and technical challenges alongside your team when necessary, demonstrating a hands-on approach to problem-solving and leading by example to ensure high-quality software development and timely project delivery

  • Work closely with the Engineering Leadership team to improve the effectiveness of the Engineering org as a whole

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 3+ years of experience in a Software Engineering management role

  • Incorporates testing and thinks about reliability as a natural part of delivering working software.

  • Experienced with several programming paradigms.

  • Solid knowledge of databases, SQL, and version control tools.

  • Adequate understanding of infrastructure and DevOps.

  • Able to design and architect maintainable and scalable technical systems

  • Experience working with the business: thinks critically about work to meet business goals.

  • Experience breaking down large initiatives into incrementally implementable deliverables

  • Experience setting and evaluating goals for direct reports.
