Thumbtack’s Data Engineering team is a functional organization within Engineering that works closely with engineers, analysts, data scientists, and machine learning engineers to help design and curate data sets originating from internal and third-party sources to meet current and future needs. Today the Data organization within Thumbtack Engineering is composed of a Data Platform team focused on building core systems and infrastructure for working with data at scale, and a centralized Data Engineering team that owns core data sets and pipelines, as well as data tools that enable developer productivity and data conformance. However, a single, centralized Data Engineering team has struggled to meet the demands of many varied business domains, due to differing maturity levels in data management at Thumbtack’s scale.
The ChallengeIn order to address this, Thumbtack is expanding our Data Engineering strategy to ensure the next generation of home care is built on a rock-solid foundation by differentiating some of the work into central and decentralized Data teams. To address this, Thumbtack is enhancing its Data Engineering strategy. We are differentiating work between central and decentralized Data teams to build the next generation of home care on a robust foundation.. Our vision is to accelerate the flow of data inside the platform, ensuring that teams are thinking about data as a product while they build, without slowing them down.
In order to accomplish that, we’re expanding to create a new embedded Data Engineering team, made up of one existing squad working with Marketing teams, plus two new sub-teams intended to support marketplace dynamics and operations domains. You’ll help us grow and direct our marketing data strategy, while working closely with engineering and data science leaders to set the direction for your sub-teams. This role offers an exciting mix of enhancing existing successes and exploring and iterating in new domains.
You’ll never be alone, however. The Data organization is already a highly-collaborative team, and you’ll work closely with a Product Manager focused on data, a Technical Program Manager supporting cross-functional projects, your peer manager in Core Data Engineering, and tech leads across the team. You’ll support each other to build a stronger and more innovative Data organization at Thumbtack.
