Build to Protect Civilization

TRM is a blockchain intelligence company that’s on a mission to build a safer financial system for billions of people. We’re a lean, high-impact team tackling some of the world’s most critical challenges, ranging from human trafficking and financial fraud to terrorist financing. We are builders who power governments, financial institutions, and crypto companies when the clock is running and the consequences are real. This is why every TRMer is a bet on our future and has the power to change our trajectory.

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will have end-to-end ownership of investigation, analytics, model development, and data product delivery that feed directly into TRM’s product. You will specialize in combating blockchain-related Fraud and Scam, working directly with specialized intelligence analysts to develop intelligence used by our customers.

The intelligence you uncover will help identify new threat vectors that are unique to cryptocurrencies and blockchains. The data you produce will be consumed by prestigious entities such as former FBI, Secret Service, the private sector, and other law enforcement agencies, enabling them to stay ahead of evolving criminal activities in the cryptocurrency space.

The impact you will have here:

  • Develop custom models, algorithms, and interactive visualizations that will be consumed by former FBI, Secret Service, and Europol agents and analysts to detect new threat vectors unique to cryptocurrencies and blockchains
  • Collaborate with engineers and research scientists to design algorithms to analyze complex data structures inherent to cryptocurrencies and blockchains. This will involve working with distributed ledger technologies, cryptographic protocols, and transactional data to uncover suspicious activities.
  • Create interactive visualizations that allow law enforcement agencies to explore and understand complex blockchain data easily. These visualizations will enable investigators to navigate through the data effectively and identify key insights related to potential fraud and financial crime.
  • As a leader in the team, you will collaborate closely with intelligence analysts, data scientists, and research scientists to align on project goals, methodologies, and deliverables. You will communicate your findings and insights effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You will stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, and fraud and scam-related crime. This will involve continuous learning, attending conferences, and exploring research papers to incorporate cutting-edge techniques into your work.
  • Develop your skills through exceptional training as well as frequent coaching and mentoring from colleagues
  • Establish best practices and statistical rigor around data-driven decision-making

What we’re looking for:

  • Your academic background is in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Economics or Physics. Advanced degree preferred.
  • You have 5+ years of experience working in an analytical role.
  • You have proven experience with at least one programming language (Python preferred) and are comfortable developing code in a team environment (e.g. git, notebooks, testing).
  • You have a working knowledge of relational databases, (e.g. SQL)
  • You think about data in terms of statistical distributions and have a big enough analytics toolbox to know how to find patterns in data and identify targets for performance
  • You have a high tolerance for ambiguity. You find a way through. You anticipate. You connect and synthesize.

About the Team:

  • The team operates with a high level of collaboration and interdependence, fostering an inclusive culture where connections extend beyond work. We value diverse personalities and seek someone who is both results-driven and sociable, with strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills, along with a positive, solutions-oriented mindset.
  • As a globally distributed team, members may observe different timezones. However, most of the team will overlap between the hours of 7am-12pm PST for meetings and collaboration.
  • All team members, regardless of location must have at least 4 hour overlap with PST business hours.
  • The team is involved in 2 different on-calls
    • Attribution on-call: only requires focus on working time (average of 2 hours a day every 2 months)
    • Data Science on-call: full week on-call to ensure Data Science pipelines are running smoothly (average of 1-2 hours a day every 2 months)

Learn about TRM Speed in this position:

  • Deliver a last minute impactful project for a key customer
  • Build complex products effectively with tight timeframes (1-2 sprints for MVP)
  • Work on several projects in parallel with different priorities and stakeholders

The following represents the expected range of compensation for this role:

  • The estimated base salary range for this role is $170,000 - $195,000. Please note that the base range is applicable to the US and will be different depending on the country.
