Job Overview

The Senior Counsel, AI & Legal Technology serves as a senior legal advisor supporting Relativity on all matters relating to AI, product development, and legal technology. This role reports directly to the General Counsel.

Job Description and Requirements

Primary Objectives:

  • Serve as the go-to legal advisor for issues relating to AI, product development, and marketing.

  • Monitor, interpret, and communicate developments in AI law and regulation (domestic and international) as well as industry trends — translating complexity into actionable guidance.

  • Develop internal policies, frameworks, agreement terms and best practices that enable the business to move quickly and in compliance with applicable and emerging laws.

  • Develop and advise on industry relationships, and negotiate terms with independent software vendors, open source providers, strategic partners, and go-to-market collaborations.

  • Review and advise on AI-specific terms in customer and vendor agreements and customer-facing materials,

  • Advise on product development, feature launches, and go-to-market strategies, recommending practical and defensible approaches.

Secondary Objective:

Partner cross-functionally with Engineering/Applied Science, Product, Partner, Customer Success, Strategy, Procurement, and other business stakeholders to enable growth, manage legal risk, develop scalable processes, and support strategic initiatives. Support the Partner team on collaboration agreements, co-marketing arrangements, and alliance structures with legal technology partners and AI vendors.

  • Assist business stakeholders with legal review of marketing activities, joint initiatives, and external-facing technology collaborations.

Welcome to a different kind of legal team.

We don't slow business down — we help it move forward. This is a team of legal professionals who are as invested in outcomes as the business teams we support. We're looking for an attorney who thrives at the intersection of law and business — someone who picks up a pen to find a path forward using their legal expertise, not to put up a roadblock. You draft and negotiate with confidence, you're energized by complexity, and you bring solutions to the table before anyone has to ask. The ideal candidate moves fast without losing the thread, leads with strategy while staying in the weeds when it matters, and influences stakeholders well beyond the legal lane. You know how to turn ambiguity into clarity, surface issues early, and come ready with answers. You treat process improvement as a competitive advantage and approach every challenge with a positive, collaborative instinct. If you're a critical thinker with a genuine love for the craft of legal work, this is your team.

This is a pivotal, new role, with room to grow as the company, the industry, and the regulatory environment evolve.

Role Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead legal representative for enterprise AI, product development, marketing and legal technology. You will be a senior, visible voice — not buried in a large legal department. Your opinions will shape company strategy.

  • You are a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to understanding, and being able to address, legal and compliance questions in company products and business operations, and with respect to the vendor products and services that are critical components of company business operations and customer solutions.

  • Be a reliable and trusted advisor to our internal stakeholders by providing creative, strategic legal advice and business counsel on commercial, operational and strategic legal issues, as well as providing timely and accurate responses.  Identify the issues, and then solve for them.

  • Engage with our customers – make sure they feel listened to and heard, and above all, deliver.

  • Work directly with Product, Marketing, Customer Success, Partner, and Strategy teams — not just other lawyers.

  • Suggest and work on improvements in processes, e.g. new standard approaches to beta testing, or variations in product documentation and contract language to enhance efficiency and align to business and product requirements.

  • Exhibit agility and enjoyment working with AI legal technology tools by thriving on the efficiency they create. Know how to identify which ones work for what purposes, and why, and be willing and flexible about trying out new ones.

  • Skilled knowledge working with AI tools (including legal technology tools), Microsoft O365, Salesforce and Ironclad.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Six (6) or more years of relevant experience in-house and/or at a law firm supporting technology initiatives, which might include experience with intellectual property, M&A, technology transactions, privacy, and data. Meaningful exposure to AI, data, and technology legal issues

  • Experience with software development, open source licensing issues, including OSI-approved license compliance, OEM licensing; computer technology; familiarity with developer and marketplace agreements, including API terms, SaaS agreements, and platform policies.

  • Background in marketing law, including knowledge of FTC and applicable state laws.

  • Strong understanding of technology, including legal technology, cloud services, software licensing models, open source, information security, privacy, intellectual property, and regulatory considerations.

  • Experience supporting AI-enabled products, legal technology, and emerging technology issues.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong communicator who can explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers without oversimplifying.

  • Intelligence, flexibility, creativity, diligence, resourcefulness, responsiveness, and strong communications skills.

  • Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset — you identify risk and propose a path forward, not a stop sign

  • Required: Deep, demonstrable knowledge of the AI regulatory landscape, including emerging U.S. and international frameworks (EU AI Act, EU omnibus, state-level AI bills, FTC guidance, etc.).

  • Desirable but not required: Basic knowledge of intellectual property and proprietary rights issues including data, trade secrets and trademarks.

  • Desirable but not required: Experience advising product and marketing teams in a fast-paced technology or legal technology company.

  • JD degree from an accredited law school and license to practice in the United States

  • Ability to research and analyze legal issues

  • Solid proficiency with AI tools, legal technology tools, MS Office and legal research platforms and tools. Familiarity with Salesforce, Ironclad and Asana.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.

  • Active bar membership in good standing

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Intelligence, flexibility, creativity, diligence, responsiveness, and strong communications skills.

  • Strong exposure to computer and software technology concepts.

  • Solid proficiency with MS Office, Salesforce, and Contract Management Software
