The Role: Senior Controls Design Engineer

As a Senior Controls Design Engineer, you will lead the design, review, and standardization of EPMS and BMS control systems across hyperscale data center projects. This role exists to ensure controls architectures, sequences of operation, and monitoring systems are scalable, reliable, and aligned with Switch standards.

You will serve as a technical leader across design engineering efforts, partnering with consultants, vendors, and internal stakeholders to improve system performance, consistency, and operational readiness.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead EPMS and BMS controls design across multiple hyperscale data center projects

  • Review controls designs and documentation throughout project milestones, including 30%, 60%, 90%, IFP, and IFC stages

  • Resolve design issues and drive closure of review comments

  • Develop and maintain Division 25 documentation and controls standards

  • Lead development and standardization of sequences of operation for mechanical and electrical systems

  • Support design and optimization of large-scale chiller plant controls and sequencing strategies

  • Coordinate with design consultants, manufacturers, vendors, and internal engineering teams

  • Support equipment selection, system integration, and technical issue resolution

  • Host technical reviews and subject matter expert meetings

  • Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance across projects

  • Develop and maintain controls standards, specifications, and Basis of Design documentation

  • Evaluate emerging controls technologies, architectures, and programming approaches

  • Conduct site assessments and support continuous improvement initiatives across projects

  • Identify opportunities to improve cost, quality, schedule, and operational consistency

What You’ll Bring

Required:

  • 8+ years of experience in controls design, BAS/BMS, EPMS, or mission-critical controls environments

  • Advanced knowledge of EPMS and BMS platforms

  • Experience with HVAC controls, mechanical systems, and mission-critical infrastructure

  • Experience developing and reviewing sequences of operation for complex facilities

  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems, power monitoring systems, and controls integration

  • Experience managing external design consultants and multidisciplinary project teams

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and controls network diagrams

  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field

  • Equivalent experience and industry certifications will be considered

  • Experience with Bluebeam, Revit, Excel, Smartsheet, Procore, and Microsoft Office applications

  • Experience with hyperscale data center environments and large-scale chiller plant controls

  • Experience supporting design standards and enterprise-level controls strategies
