Summary/Job Purpose:

Serves as the senior claims and risk mitigation advisor for the Political Risk, Credit and Surety portfolio. Provides specialized claims expertise when matters arise while maintaining readiness through watch-list oversight, coverage and policy wording analysis, and proactive risk mitigation support. Partners with underwriting, claims, clients, brokers and other stakeholders to identify emerging exposures, help prevent or reduce losses, and support sound business decisions across complex domestic and international transactions.


Essential Functions:

Claims Advisory and Management (25%)

  • Acts as the dedicated claims advisor for Political Risk, Credit and Surety matters, providing technical guidance from initial notice through resolution when claims or potential claims arise.
  • Coordinates evaluation, documentation, strategy and communication for complex matters, working closely with Claims, underwriting, legal counsel and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assesses claim severity, coverage considerations and business implications, and helps develop practical approaches that protect the Company’s interests while supporting fair and timely outcomes.

Watch-List and Emerging Risk Oversight (25%)

  • Maintains and manages watch lists for insured transactions, clients, projects, counterparties and countries where developments may create potential claims or elevated exposures.
  • Connects relevant company, industry and country developments to insured risks; identifies potential deterioration, escalation triggers and emerging claim indicators.
  • Provides concise, actionable updates to underwriting, Claims and leadership to strengthen awareness, preparedness and decision-making.

Policy Wording and Coverage Analysis (25%)

  • Reviews manuscript policy forms, endorsements and proposed wording changes for Political Risk, Credit and Surety business, with particular attention to claims and coverage implications.
  • Analyzes coverage provisions, conditions, exclusions, claims timing requirements and other contractual nuances, and provides technical input to underwriting and Claims.
  • Helps develop clear, consistent approaches to policy interpretation and documentation across complex client-specific forms.

Client Risk Mitigation and Relationship Support (25%)

  • Partners with clients, brokers and underwriting teams to identify practical actions that may prevent, mitigate or reduce potential losses before a claim develops.
  • Participates in meetings with prospective and existing clients and brokers to explain the claims approach, strengthen confidence in the Company’s capabilities and support relationship development.
  • Supports financial institution, public agency and other client relationships involving complex domestic and international transactions; provides specialized insight on risk mitigation and claims readiness.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. The role provides senior-level technical guidance and influences outcomes through subject matter expertise and cross-functional partnership.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Juris Doctor or other advanced degree in law, international affairs, business, finance, risk management or a related field is preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in commercial insurance claims, underwriting, legal practice, credit risk, political risk, surety or a closely related specialty.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing complex insurance coverage, policy wording, claims, financial risks or international transactions.
  • Experience in Political Risk, Trade Credit, Surety, Financial Lines, international insurance or a related credit-based product is strongly preferred.

Other Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of insurance claim practices, coverage analysis, policy interpretation and risk mitigation principles.
  • Ability to evaluate complex company, transaction, counterparty and country developments and connect them to potential insured exposures.
  • Ability to work effectively with senior underwriters, claims professionals, legal counsel, clients, brokers, financial institutions and public-sector organizations.
  • Interest in and working knowledge of international business, international relations, political risk, credit risk or global affairs.
  • Industry designation or advanced insurance education is preferred.

SALARY: The estimated salary range for this position is $175,000.00 - $250,000.00 per year. This is a good-faith assessment of the salary range for this position only. In determining the actual salary within this range, MSIG USA will consider a candidate’s relevant experience, location, and other job-related factors.
